Rain Forest In Need of Rain

One of the really cool things about having jobs that take me to the woods is the lunch time hikes. The only bad part about it right now is that I live in a rain forest in need of rain...it's been days and days since we had any real rain.

The ferns are still around in the gullies, but a lot of the leaves are all droopy and a lot of them are turning colors and falling.

If I understood Ken (kgd) right then this is sassafras...and it's looking pretty dry too. Pretty large leaves...the blade on this knife is 5 inches.

The Blackberries are starting to look pretty dry too, and not as sweet as usual.

Even the Lichens and spiderwebs are dusty and dry.

A pine burl?

Everyone know what this is?

It's more solid than it looks...

If you said fatwood, pitchwood, lightwood, lighterpine or any of the other colloquial names for pitch heavy dead pine you're right.

That piece of fatwood is rather interesting. Sticks out like a sore thumb.

As far as you needing rain.. I wish my woods looked like that right now. Maybe I could actually walk through it then. Covered in green everywhere, and one step into it means you get tossed right back out by the mosquito supply in it.

Drying up here, too. I called last night to check dam releases, hoping my favorite spot would be running high like last time I went, but the flow was about 1/4 what it was then:(

Yeah...I don't miss the mosquitoes...but everything is starting to look pretty rough.

Dry here in VA too. Very hot as well 101 yesterday 91 today but more humid.

Yeah...hot and muggy here to. Humid from all the evaporation.

The rivers are low here too. I rode over to the Sequatchie valley yesterday and the Little sequatchie River is at about half the usual depth.

if you call that dry then i can't imagine how much rain you get. the leaves, blackberries, etc. all look like normal in the state parks around here in nj & ny. it's insanely hot this week (going into the 100s) but overall the rain tally has been average or higher actually this past few years.

great pics buddy, were prayin for rain also, these 100 degree days are killin me!!!!lol..........

Well...it is called a temperate rain forest for a reason :)

Thanks man.

Yeah, they are getting rough here too.

It's finally looking like we'll get some rain here in SE KY. Supposed to start tonight or tomorrow and go through Saturday.
This is one time I'm glad to see it come. My lawn is brown and the blackberries are bitter as an old maid. Even the elderberries are taking forever ; and everybody I know has an ant problem. I'm ready to set my house on fire and move!

That looks like a sassafrass to me, MW. But it's too big to get much use out of. All the ones I was ever taught to use were either: bark of the young saplings or the roots of the sprouts (I like the roots better, the bark doesn't have as rich a taste).

Looking at weather.com it looks like we have some good chances coming up...I hope some of them happen

I know where your rain is: here in SoCal it's a freezing cold 64 and has rained three days this month. Normally we don't even see a cloud, much less a droplet from the sky, from April until October, so three days of rain is unheard of this time of year.

I'd gladly trade weather :)

Looks like you need some wet for sure. Here in Alberta we get our share of dry spells too ,but recently we get passing thunderstorms to help things out. We usually get a fire ban sometime every year though , when things are tinder dry.

Great pics Mistwalker, I hope you get some rain soon.

Bryan

Thanks Bryan, I hope we do too bro.

Yeah we really need some rain. Sitting on the river bank the other day leaves were falling like autumn.

What is this?

If it is the tree you are asking about. It is a Sassafras Tree. The knife is made by Dylan Fletcher. AKA Dylside.

Right on Tony, thanks bro :)
