rain-x

Don't know about the rust, but at 60 mph the water just beads up and rolls off !!

Usually wax will perform quite well in the rust-protection category. I use Rennaissance Wax and I like it a lot. Pure carnuba will work just fine also. I only use these on my finished knives, because I use Starrett M-1 on everything until the knife is finished.

well, I got a blade (5160) out the "all screwed up" pile, put some on and left it in water over night (6hr). When I checked it this morning, no rust at all except on the handle where there was none.

Interesting results so far.
I'd have never thought of trying this.
I guess the obvious question is: are you going to keep it in the water for the long haul? Say a month or so, just to see how long it holds up until the water breaks the Rain-X down?

If you are, please check in from time to time. You might have hit on a good thing here.:)

All the best,
