Raindrop Damascus for EDC

Good morning everyone! It's been a while since I have been here.

I am wondering if anyone out there happens to EDC a Raindrop Damascus blade?

I owned a few Damascus Sebenzas once upon a time but they were never more than display knives. I would try to EDC one but they were all sold to a very kind member here who's purchase helped my family through a rough time.

I know the heat treat was changed around 06/2013 and I'm not sure how that effects the Damascus. The time has come to add a new EDC knife now that times have improved but I can't afford to buy a knife that sits in the safe so I'm trying to focus my purchase on a knife suitable for EDC as a treat to myself.

My tasks will be the usual daily tasks, opening packages, cutting threads, but keep in mind it will be carried in my pants pocket so I'm not sure about corrosion resistance either.

I look forward to any and all input.

Thank you so much and it's good to be back.

Justin

I've got a "C-14" Raindrop Damascus large that I got from BF member, who put a wicked sharp edge on it, which has stayed shaving sharp with crock stick maintenance for the better part of a year. I prefer the BG42 to the SV30/35 family, but like the Damascus even better.

That's great to hear bart1. Have you had to apply oil to the blade to prevent corrosion or anything? How often would you say you have used the blade?

If money is tight, a standard knife would be a better choice for a user. However, if you are set on Damascus, it will work fine as a user knife. About the only thing I have noticed, is that the pattern fades a slight amount with use.

Mine has been fine as a light user. The only problem I've had is the last owner wore a faded patch in the etch alongside the stud.

The newer Damascus is stainless, so no special treatment is necessary.

This is awesome to hear. I have a Raindrop on the way also and while my large Insingo will still be the workhorse, the small Raindrop will definitely get carried and used. No shelf queens here. Good to know they can be used without worry!

I try to keep it clean, soap and water, then dry... I'd guess an average day means getting used 20+ times, food, letters, boxes, etc..... Don't really oil the blade, butter works great!

Sorry for shilling in your thread but I do have a Large Raindrop Seb on the exchange right now. It's a little broken in already but I have it listed at a nice price, might assuage some of your fears about purchasing such a fine knife for EDC.

My experience after light use with it over about a year is that the damascus is a bit easier to maintain on a strop and seems to take a slightly more keen edge than the s35vn but might be a hair worse in edge retention.

Thanks everyone.

I should comment, I carry a plain 25 right now and have a small micarta 21 coming home from the spa shortly.

I was strongly considering selling both and going to a micarta 25, but then I saw the Raindrop 25.

But then there is the Inkosi. Since I have been away from the forums I had not heard about it.

Justsomedude. Is it a 25?

The one I have for sale is a Large 21. I'm moving it on because I find myself reaching for the small micarta with damascus instead, pretty much every time. Definitely prefer my CRKs with damascus.

Exactly what I have, rotated with a Spydie Pits to comply with our strange laws ;) I've had a few Crk's and found the small micarta raindrop my favourite so far :)

I prefer the 25 to the large 21. I can't say anything for sure about smaller options yet. I'm going to a local store today and see if I can get my hands on an Inkosi. I suppose if the Inkosi is better for me, I can try and wait for inlay and Damascus versions.

Thanks for your help everyone.
