I don't know why Cold Steel is closing them out, but the venerable zombie killer has, itself, been placed on the chopping block.
I bought my Rajah II for about a hundred bucks, and except for the rough blade finish and the grivory handle, it is a fine folder, and strong -- just as strong as its more beautiful twin, the Rajah 1.
Since CS is apparently re-releasing many of its older models with the Tri-Ad lock system, the company likely feels it no longer can sustain the Rajah 1, which sports a polished blade, aluminum head and G10 scales, for $339. At any rate, I've been waiting for a good price and, frankly, never thought it would happen. But now the closeout price is so good that I bought three of them!
After buying the Spartan for $59, I found many things I liked and many more things I didn't like. Opening and closing the Spartan was a chore, particularly the latter. After carrying it for a day I had had quite enough. If CS's new knives have reinforced handles and Tri-Ad locks, I don't hold much hope for them. Strength, while important, reaches a point of diminishing returns, and though I like the shape of the knife handles, I don't want heavier, bulkier knives, overall, especially ones with stiff springs.
The Rajahs were always an exception. Strong enough for camping and hiking, and easy to carry in the city and robust enough to cut back vines in the yard, it's a pity that it's on the way out. Perhaps something else will replace it, who knows? I got my Rajah Is for about a hundred each, which is about what I paid for my Rahah II. The former is much more nicely finished, though. Can't wait to hear the reviews of the new Gunsites and Recon-1s. I hope the Voyagers aren't reissued with steel liners!
