I still don't like how folders rely so much on thing piece of plastic and brass in terms of smoothness.

those are some really good pictures. mine never come out that nice. seeing them is making want this knife. seems simple, clean, strong. my supervisor, at one job, has said he prefers me carrying a folder than a fixed blade. this might be perfect for that :D

I've had them open before - what were you doing? Polishing the plastic washers? :) I opened my triad Recon 1 a couple of times to do a blade reshaping and coating mod. Just wondering why you were inside your Raj 2?

phosphor bronze and teflon washers, i don't think it gets smoother than that. what do you like ?

My mistake.
I don't like the washers, because they have ruined each "heavy use" folder I've had. I end up messing them up, and they make the blade close off centered wich can drive you mad.

I had it opened up last week to help out a fellow forum member with blade centering issues. I'm not one to waste a photo, so... :)

Agreed  Why do they even put nylon/plastic/teflon washers on decent folders anyway? I hate 'em (a mental thing with me maybe). Slippery buggers, flimsy - just don't give me the security blanket like bronze or "metal" washers do.

Hope you got it fixed.

1. Does anyone who wants a CS Tri-Ad have any choice in this?

2. If not, can they be modded and where to get the parts?

I modded my Recon 1 but the tolerances were looser after removing the Telon coating and very slight blade play side to side. I talked to another Triad modder and he took a generation I, Recon 1 washers bronze & nylon into the hardware store and matched up a set of metal to fill in the gap.

You wouldn't believ how a bit of coating removal could throw off the pivot but it does.

I don't have a 1st generation anymore to make it easy at a local hardware so I'm going to measure the pivot diameter and buy some washers here - http://www.knifekits.com/vcom/index.php?cPath=60_87_88&osCsid=2f62fadc4d6a6cc0688321d6e3e65905

Here's nylons - http://www.knifekits.com/vcom/index.php?cPath=60_87&osCsid=2f62fadc4d6a6cc0688321d6e3e65905

Cool pictures!

Seems like the Teflon washers work great until they get impregnated with grit.

Then they aren't so slippery.

You had bladeplay issues just from removing the coating? Were you able to get rid of the play by tightening the pivot screw? How did you remove the coating? I'm surprised because I thought the coating was so thin that removing it wouldn't make a difference, or only a tiny difference that could be solved by tightening the pivot.

Yes I did have bladeplay issues. The tolerances on the new Recon 1 (at least) are amazingly tight. Another member who gave me the idea also ran into it. The blade is now snug but I've got her a little snugger than I'd like. It SNAPS! into place when I open it now.

I guess I forget how loud the Triad snapped into place as I did it the day after getting it. I'm sure it's fine as is. It opens okay and closes okay, but I like to start them out and roll my wrist and pop them the last 1/2 way or so. I can manage that about 1/2 the time.

I scraped the coating off all of the metal with a very thin flat screwdriver and the tip of a S30V Kershaw Leek. Took about 4 hours to remove the metal and reprofile the blade a bit.

The Cold Steel logo and model # are very distinct, the flash makes them look like they're rubbed off but in normal light it looks like a factory stonewash finish.

Here's a Med Espada that I modded. I cut out an island from the spacer to allow a lanyard. Waved too.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the comments about the photos. Lol, I just point, the camera does the rest (Canon SD1400is). Regarding the washers... that blade is so heavy I bet you could use sandpaper washers and still wrist flick it open ;)

CZIV, nice job on that blade. CS should ship 'em out that way.

I took my rajah apart awhile ago and was surprised by how all six hex nuts were recessed into the back spacer and alternated on both sides.
