2 months ago i received my Queen RAT Cattleman with ram horn handles, ordered from A.G. Russell. i have belt sheath carried it twice, but found it needed sharpening. when i went to sharpen it, i noticed fairly deep checks in the horn on one side. the knife has not been exposed to sunlight or close to any heat source. i soaked (submerged) it in lemon oil for 24 hours, however as horn is modified hair, not bone, i'm not sure that it is able to absorb any oil. if this continues the scale will end up flaking off.
any suggestions ? if i return it, how likely is a replacement scale to do the same thing ? (looks to me it depends to some degree on the direction horn was cut). thanks, roland

I just checked mine and it seems fine. In fact, I just put some of the lemon oil on just before reading your post.

If you have an issue with it, contact my good friend Jeff Randall, jeff@jungletraining.com, and explain the situation to him. Tell him that I asked you to check with him as regards your options.

You could also try to put some conditioner on it. The active ingredient in conditioner is lanolin, and it should work for horn since horn is made of the same material as hair. Many people use conditioner for buffalo handled khukuris to good effect, although I've never had to go that route.
