Hey All, Curious how strong the lock is on the RAM? Anybody have some info on this lock? Thanks in Advance, Take Good Care, and Be Safe Always.

God Bless :)

Strength wise I am not for sure, but it has a very solid look up with extremely minimal blade play, and thats if you use a lot of pressure.

I am getting ready to do a comparison between and the paramilitary in knife review and testing, it will take a while for me to post it tough. 20+ pics and a good size amount of info comparing the two.

One of the best reviews I've read! Like it. How would the RAM hold up as an any situation knife?

Well I have used it to cut zip ties, slim jim wrappers, open chip bags, slice a sub, cut a pringle can in half so I don't have to reach as far to get a chip, cut through a 12 pack of soda to get a can because I was to lazy to turn it around, and I have cut hemp and paracord with it. So for the short period that I have had it I have not had to put it down and get a different knife. I hope that answered you question, unfortunately now I'm hungry :D.

Edit: Thanks to the magic of day old taco bell and the invention of the microwave life is good.

Take a look at this video on the RAM lock.
You have a lock stud on the blade that engages with the lock plate.
Looks to me like you would have to break something for it to fail.
I just don't see it failing under normal or even harsh conditions.

I have a friend's all black plain edge RAM in front of me. Rock solid, no blade play. Passes spine whack with flying colors.

Keep in mind, all Kershaw folding knives that leave the factory get multiple spine whacks. Remember the thread on the zing? RJ Martin was like  when he saw how they made sure the knives locked up perfectly.

svrider3. Thank You for the video link ...Very Informative and Interesting.

knivesandguns, Thank You also for the Info Sir.

I know you all don't know what I do??? I'm an LEO (12 going on 13 years) ...Please Be Gentle ;). Along with my Duties as an LEO, I'm Also a Defensive Tactics Instructor, Do Knife/Counter Knife Defense, Firearms Instructor, Tactical Team Member/Precision Shooting (Sniper), and Arson Investigator. We're a small department and we have to wear many hats :o.

I've been practicing some "flow drills" with the RAM and have been very pleased with what It's capable of doing. I'm impressed with how quick it can be deployed and how easy it is to manipulate the different grips.

What impressed me the most, is when using the RAM in the "filipino" style grip. It feels very NATURAL in the hand and the thumb rests in a very natural position on the area just in front of the jimping (that slight curve on top of the spine). The index finger rests perfect (choil) in this style of grip and is very firm and controlable. During a slash, one (or at least I can) can feel the power and balance of the RAM. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the RAM is CENTERED in the palm firmly :o ...this includes a reverse style grip.

Please Understand this is JUST MY POINT OF VIEW FROM WHAT I'VE DISCOVERED ON MY OWN. There are many others out there that may disagree with my findings and very much more experienced ;).

This is why I had asked about the strength of the lock. I haven't tried any cutting drills with the RAM ... I didn't want to bang up my only RAM I have :o. I presently have an all BLACK PE RAM on the way:thumbup:.

I just thought I'd share some of my experience and discovery with the RAM. Thank You for listening. Take Good Care All and Be Safe Always.

God Bless :)

Lock strength is depends on the 'stud' on one-side of the blade only. Unlike stud-lock/axis/Tri-ad(theoretical 4)/ultra(cold-steel) that has 2 shearing surface, the ram-lock has only 1 therefore not as strong.

I personally would like for the 'stud' which is on one side of the Ram and Mudd to be thicker in diameter. Not necessary for the detent 'stud' but for the locking stud. A small increase in diameter (and it is possible looking at the design) has a squared increase in area. Looking at the opened mechanism of the Ram and Mudd I am sure it can be done (by Kershaw, not us) and is possible. This is my only qualm with the Ram and Mudd (which for my Mudd is otherwise Perrrrfect).

Regarding the sufficiency of the lock strength it is adequate (exceed actually) for every day use but I'm sorta like the kind that wants a higher level of safety/strength especially when it could be achieved with little cost/change/mod.

But it (like all Kershaw) is great in quality. My Mudd is a pleasure to use/open/close as well as my other Kershaw/ZTs. For stronger lock choose ZT300 or Stud-lock and I'm comparing aong Kershaw's line and not involving other brands.

Thank you for posting your finds on the RAM as a versatile SD option, stay safe.

Also that is one impressive resume .

In reference to the comparison of the RAM to the Para, I think it's a really good comparison. Great ergos, materials, lock and action etc.

The RAM carries so much better, is smaller closed, has a better action and arguably a better lock (but it's not clear...). The Para has a better grip and better steel. If you don't include price, I imagine it's about even, if you do, it's clearly the RAM.

^ I agree mostly, I think the compression locrk is stronger than the hawk lock, both lock up solid so that isn't really a problem. Also when it comes to grips I prefer the RAM a little bit.

Hey Knifebros, Just got an e-mail from a fellow martial artist/SD instructor who does extensive testing on various knives fixed, folders, and blade locks. From what he explained, the RAM "HAWK LOCK" IS TOP NOTCH!!! He gave the lock 2 THUMBS UP :thumbup:!!! Just Thought I'd Share. Take Good Care All and Be Safe Always.

God Bless :)
