I am looking at making a RAM my next Kershaw. While trying to find the best deal on one I came across a description on A.G. Russell's site that says The Hawk lock is a "minimal assist to the flipper opening" ,but if you use the thumb studs there is no assist. While on New Graham it doesn't say anything about an assist. So my question is is there an assist or not? It doesn't really matter I'm gonna get one anyway just curious.

It is definitely Non-assisted. I saw that in A.G. Russell as well. . .not sure why they explain it like that.

Straight from the source. Thank you very much for the reply Gavin. Like I said it didn't really matter one way or another I'm gonna order 1 just had my curiosity up.

Do you think maybe they felt that the resistance from lock helps pre-load when using the flipper, giving the impression that it has some sort of assist?

Well, i had a long talk with one of the guys from A.G., can't remember his name at the moment. But he felt that, since you could take the blade almost to the closed position and let off on it that the blade springs out about a degree. And that little bit of force was helping the blade open. Which, as i argued, is not true. Although you can push the blade to almost closed, and have it spring back out a little bit. when flipping the knife, the blade accelerates much faster than the detent. So that little bit of energy is never transfered to the moving blade. It's the resistance generated that makes the knife flip so well. Another way to show that the detent has nothing to do with the flipping action is to pull back on the lock, and let a finger apply slight pressure on the blade while flipping it, in essence creating the necessary resistance for the blade to flip out.
In the end i guess i wasn't able to make my case clear enough, and the 'copy' in A.G. catologe reflects that.

Because sometimes it REALLY does feel that way. Good point KD:thumbup:

That's pretty stubborn of them since you are the designer of that system.
An excellent flipper system at that.

It really does. When I first started taking mine to work, I had to prove
it to some guys it's not an AO....and that can be really hard when you
just slightly pull on the flipper and the thing snaps open. :D

Only a guess, but I would read their statement as saying that opening the blade requires a minimum assist from the user to open the blade with the flipper.

From AG...
"Use the Flipper and you will detect a very slight assist to the opening".

There's no slight assist, it's all flipper, but it flips so damn smooth it
feels like it.

Only, I think, in the same way the Ener-G requires potential energy to build up prior to firing, and the Eneg-G certainly couldn't be considered an AO.

In the case of the RAM, simply opening the blade by hand (grabbing the thumbstuds and pulling it open), and letting the blade hang freely should dispel any misapprehensions of it being an assisted opener.

IMHO. ;)

Well there you go, some new material for the next RAM ad - "A manual flipper so good, even an experienced knife retailer thinks it is an assisted opener!"

Nice KD:D Kershaw should definitely have you heading up the marketing department.;)

Gavin I really love my RAM 1910. Love that smooth flipper

Any word when the RAM III will be out and what new "refinements" it will have ??

Would love to see the release moved forward a little (like the axcess release is on the Griptilian)
it makes it easier to release with a larger hand. that said I've mostly retired my Grip, and carry my RAM almost all the time. I'm spoiled by the flipper !!

Are there any new knife designs using the Hawk Lock and flipper system planned ??

dmonay. . .I'm finishing up the last of the Ram III's. . .i'll post some pics when i get them finished. As far as the Kershaw version of the Ram III, i'm not sure.
I think that the Hawk lock has a lot of potential for several designs. There are a few concepts on the drawing board, but nothing serious yet.
We do have a new locking mechanism that is coming out soon :) . . .we don't have a name for it yet, or a name for the knife that it goes on. but it's pretty cool, and really simple. . .which is a new direction for us. . lol
