Rambler: the little 'driver is no joke! What SAK tool has surprised you?

I'm talking about the phillips on the Rambler! I've used it a few times for the little #1 (or smaller?) screws on electronic stuff, but never thought to give it a try on the #2 phillips screws. Kinda figured it'd just spin in there, like trying to use ..... a ball point pen. I was wrong. It seats in there and grabs a #2 pretty darn well - way more than I ever thought possible! I think the only limitation is the amount of torque you can put on it due to the smaller frame of the knife. I usually use the drivers on the end of the can opener or the bottle opener (held at an angle) on my Farmer or Cadet for phillips screws, but it's nice to know the one on the Rambler works on #2's, too!

Anyway, this would be a pretty boring thread if this were the only thing in it. What are some SAK tools that have surprised you - using as intended, or in a "creative" way?

My Farmer's awl rocks for getting jammed staples out of my office secretary's Swingline.

I was surprised at how useful the awl is on a Soldier. I rarely drill holes with it, but it's great for those tasks that don't need a super sharp edge. Like cutting the tape on packages so the goo doesn't get on your knife edge. Or cutting the plastic wrap that they put over a bunch of small water bottles. I've used a knife blade before on that and punctured a bottle. The awl isn't sharp enough to do that unless it's on purpose.

Hi,

+1 on the Soldier's awl! I think I use that more than the knife blade. And the screwdriver tip on the combo can opener really surprises me on how well it works on both slotted and philip's screws.

I have been continually surprised by the SD tipped nail file blade on my classic. So far I've fixed a cloths dryer door latch, installed a new front door knob and dead bolt assembly, broken down firearms, took apart and fixed a gummed up fishing reel, a GE toaster, and assembled some IKEA furniture that needed a small phillips, and a host of other things.

The little SD tip is just the right shape to deal with number 2 phillips screws as well as light prying thats just too much for a thumbnail to deal with.

Rambler&manager are my favorit 58mm becouse of the very usefull philip&bottle opener.its the only model i could open with a single hand using my thumbnail and hold it right.and the blade open on the oposite of keyring. One of The tool that surprise me alot it the small plier on the 91mm models. Overall the saks are just plain awesome.

I was surprised how well the awl on the Alox Vics bores through wood, and I'm always pleased at how well the can opener works. Use it just about every day in the kitchen.

Hands down the awl on the alox SAK's

I'd be happy to lose the combo tool on my beloved alox Bantam and have the awl instead.

That would be THE perfect minimalistic SAK for me:thumbup:

Agree on the Rambler. I have it on my keychain and use it for everything.

Most often, though, as a screwdriver.

I was also very surprised to find out that the toothpick is actually highly useful for cleaning folding knives.

The can opener on really stubborn, stripped phillips heads. I usually have a driver and try it first. But I know I can pull out my soldier if things turn for the worst.

good to hear about the rambler's capabilities. I've got an alox rambler on the way, and I'm looking forward to putting it on my keyring
