Ramblings and a Knife Question

As the title says, I am first going to ramble on a bit and then I’ll ask a legitimate knife question. Also, I post this in the Busse forum because I have always considered this area my “home” on the forums and I appreciate the sense of community within a community. Now, the rambling begins.

I have experienced a variety of emotions since the attack on Tuesday. They have included sadness at the loss of life and innocence, anger, respect for the commitment and resolve of the rescuers to continue day after day, amazement at the strength of belief of the terrorists, dread, uncertainty, hope, and the unwavering knowledge that the U.S. will rise to the occasion. The wound is fresh and painful so people are crying for retribution. However, time will pass, the wound will scar over, the pain will subside and people will return to their lives. If the “war” is on, and we want to win, our whole concept of who the enemy is must evolve. Many reporters have likened the attack to a “21st century Pearl Harbor”, but finding and distinguishing this enemy will not be so easy. We will be fighting ideologies and their disciples, not countries. This will not be Desert Storm. This war will span a considerable amount of time and geography. If we go to fight in their playgrounds, they know them better than we do, their hatred for what we stand for is thousands of years old, war is a way of life, and our rear area will extend all the way back home. I would expect more attacks here, but I don’t want America to become a police state and I am concerned that in response to this or future attacks, liberties and rights may be removed. Is a sense (perhaps false) of security worth the price of liberty? I am sworn to uphold and defend the Constitution. It’s my job. I will go where they send me, I will leave behind my wife and sons, I will put myself in harm’s way for this country not because I hate extremist Muslims, but because freedom has been and is expensive. I just don’t want to know (or my kids to know) what it’s like to live without it.

That is enough of my rambling. Now the knife question. If our actions include a ground offensive, and the Marines are involved, I will likely be deployed. However, I left the pointy tip of the spear years ago and am in the business of preventing casualties and providing medical/NBC support (you know, preventive medical, staff geek, REMF, all those titles). My blade requirements are for a small dependable tool, not a tactical (nuclear of course) machete. I would like to take a Busse along and I wanted to check on knives that Busse has produced that have blades ~3 inches in length? I know of the Basic 3 and the Mean Street, but are there variants that are available. From the website, it appears that the Badger Attack is the smallest blade currently in production. Thanks in advance for your input and your time.

I would first recommend a Mean Street, though being out of production you will find yourself paying a premium price if you can find one. Every once in a while you'll see them in the exchange (I believe there is one now). You couldn't ask for a more perfect blade:D

The Basic 3 is also a nice knife but I find it too small for my hands. You might try to handle one at a show if you get a chance.

Ideally, you should wait until Jerry has a few CBL's and figures out how to grind a few Satin Jacks down to about 4";) ...or 3" if you can bribe him enough:p

The Badger E is also a fantastic knife that will give you slight chopping ability as well as more prying ability than the smaller knives. I have one in a specially made sheath that is the most comfortable thing to wear and the weight isn't even noticable.

Hello there--

Being Papa Thud's princess, I have had many an opportunity to fondle a large variety of both standard busses and variants. I must say that my favorite among the smaller knives is the Assault Shaker. It has a blade that is 2-2.5 inches in legth and has a great grip. It's a skeleton knife which means nothing but steel baby! It comes in an extremely secure neck sheath that still allows easy access to your knife. It has a place for your thumb on the handle so it makes more comfortable to work with. Like I said, it's my personal favorite of the small knives and next on my my aquisition list ;) My second reccomendation is that you grab a Police Recruit. This is the skeleton knife that Busse made before the Assault Shaker and if you have big beefy hands like my husband does, then this knife is probably more appropriate for you because the handle on the Police Recruit is a lot more substantial. But having used my husband's I can attest to the fact that it is a VERY FUN knife once I get my hands wrapped around the handle :) :) :) My third choice would be the Basic 3. It has a very comfy handle and my family likes it a lot as an all around work knife. I hope this helps :)

Wishing you good things in small packages

My first choice would be a Mean or Lean Mean Street. However, this is a close second.

I don't know if you're familiar with it yet, but I think that out of the current Busse lineup, that the Killer B would be the best.

The Killer B has a 4" blade, I think, that has a false edge and a very sharp point, which looks like a great penetrater. It has a yellow and black cord-wrapped handle, and, of course, a talon hole. I'd call the Busse shop for availability info.

I hope you come to no harm during the upcoming war. I understand you probably aren't going into direct contact with the enemy, but in war, as in everything else, anything is possible, and I will pray for you.

You have mail re: a Basic 3.

Thanks for the input. The Mean Street appears to be the one that bests matches the knife I had in mind.

Andrew, thanks for the support and prayers. My unit completed our full gear inventory and packout today. We remain on a four hour recall with a 24 hour deployment schedule and my team is in the window to go. Only time will tell. As far as proximity to the front, each situation varies, but we are usually surrounded by Marines. In that situation, I can't think of a better place to be.

JDS,
I think that a Badger Attack-E, Killer B, or Assualt Shaker will be your best bets. Take care of yourself out there. I will keep you in my prayers.

JDS,
My prayers are with you, as well as all others in the armed forces. I would have to join the others in saying the MS is probably your best bet. :D

I would also like to thank you for putting yourself in Harms way for our country.
