Ramblings on SAK models

Alright, I'll admit it. I'm a complete SAK convert and almost never carry anything else anymore. It's probably why I haven't been spending much time here lately. If i do carry something else it is a work knife like my Opinel 6, Case Soddie Jr, or a Buck 501. I'm in love with the things. My first knife I ever bought was a Victorinox Climber. I still carry it today and use it quite often. I recently acquired a red alox Cadet and have used it a little bit so far too. It is awesome, and I plan on using it as my go-to knife for "polite company", if you will. I also have a couple classics too. On my wishlist is the Rambler, black Alox Pioneer, Wenger SI, Farmer, Recruit, Bantam, and Small Tinker. There are a lot of awesome models, and then there are ones that keep me shaking my head

These are some models that really bug me.

First, the Compact. This knife has so much potential. Blade, scissors, and combo tool? What a great setup! But then they go and put the two most useless tools on the back, the corkscrew and hook. Why in the world these were chosen, I haven't a clue. Would it not be more logical to put the awl and Phillips screwdriver on it? This keeps me from buying it.

The Cadet. Like I said, I have one and I love it. It's a classic knife. However, I think the nail file could be done away with. Honestly, who uses a nail file enough to need it on a pocket knife? I understand it's probably because the cadet was intended to be a dress knife but still, a small blade or awl might have been a better choice. I realize that giving it an awl would essentially make it into a mini-Pioneer, but cmon- a nail file? JMO

Next, the Executive. I want to like this knife so much, I really do. It's basically a larger classic. But there's one thing that glares at me every time I see it, that damn orange peeler. They could've put anything there and they decided to go with an orange peeler? When I peel an orange I use a knife to score the orange. But no! We gotta have a whole new tool just for the consumption of oranges. They never thought that maybe the flat phillips head might be more useful, or any other tool at all? Jeez I would almost rather have the hook! And I know that the orange peeler is why the executive cost more than the average SAK, it's one of the only, if not the only, model to have it! Bah humbug.

The alox series. My favorite pocket knife series of all time, bar none. But there is just one thing... Every lover of SAKs knows that one thing wrong with the Alox knives. Where did the scissors go? I would surely welcome a pioneer with scissors. Or maybe a blade, scissors, combo tool package decorated with alox.

Pliers. The only thing I'm complaining about here is I don't own a model with them. :p

Odds and Ends - I miss brass liners, bails, and scales that were pinned on. Why aren't there Ramblers in every big store in America? You couldn't pay me to carry the swisscard. Why would I want a flashdrive on my knife, or a knife on my flashdrive? What the heck happened to the alox bantam? The tomo - Ohhhhh hell-to-the-no. What happened to all the alox colors? Why is that German Bundeswehr knife so hard to find?

Thanks for reading. It felt good getting this out there. I'm certainly not hating on Victorinox at all, I carry two knives made by them at any given time and recommend them to every one. In my opinion they are the best pocket knives out there for the price. But some models just make me want to angrily click "Post New Thread"

I've never really given it much thought, frankly. SAKs are what they are. I have a Mechanic, Camper, Tinker, Super Tinker, Alox Cadet and Alox Solo, and though they all have tools that I don't use that much (except the Solo), I like having them there just in case.

I've been carrying my black Executive every day since about 1999 or so. At first, I kind of felt the same about the orange peeler, but have found that it makes an excellent little scraper blade. So it really does not bother me at all anymore. And although I rarely use it to peel oranges, I have used it for that purpose a few times, and it works as advertised. I certainly didn't let it stop me from having an Executive, IMO the best of the smaller SAK models.

I also love the Alox models. My favorites are the Soldier, Pioneer and Farmer. I also own an Alox Cadet and Classic. IMO, the standard plastic-handled version of the Classic is better for overall use due to being slightly thicker for its tiny size, and the tweezers/toothpick. As for the Cadet, I agree that the nail file would have been better off as an awl, or maybe even a small second blade. Some people have modded the nail file on theirs, but I would simply have preferred another option in the design.

For the standard-sized models, I definitely prefer the Alox versions. Besides the other often-mentioned reasons, I also like that they are even-ended; the plastic-handled versions are wider at the bottom end.

As for my SAK EDC, I always have my Executive, and recently got my Farmer. They make an outstanding pair.

When I heard about the Compact, I couldn't wait to find a variation that had blue scales. If anything, it got me to buy more wine for me to use the corkscrew on :). How else can the knife carry the mini eyeglass screwdriver?

I've always liked the Tinker model and since I lost my original Tinker w/c was my first ever SAK, I've moved on to a Small Tinker. The Small Tinker is more compact and it also has an opening just behind the Philips screwdriver to hold a Straight pin!

After 21 years with some variation of the SAK Tinker, I've come to appreciate the inline Philips screwdriver that's in a SwissChamp or Explorer. I've even grown to like the screwdrivers in the Cybertool series.

I can agree with a lot of what you say. The cadet is ruined for me by the darn nail file. A small version of the soldier/SI awl would be great, as would a second small blade like the old cadet 2 used to have.

I tried to like the executive as well, but the orange peeler was a turn off to me. They need to put the bantam's combo tool on it. That would give it some real world tool capability for screws, cans, bottles.

Sometimes I can only wonder what's in the water in Switzerland?

Carl.

SwissBianco makes a Micro-Farmer which is a Cadet 2 with an added saw blade. I dig mine.

Amen!

Amen again!

Why aren't there Ramblers in every big store in America?

And a third amen! The Rambler is -- pound for pound -- the most useful SAK I own. Mine goes everywhere with me.

I love the nail file. I get a lot of stuff under my nails and it lets me get it out without cutting myself. And I have had nails that needed some quick file work so that they didn't get ripped off. The nail file is useful and I will always defend it.

Absolutely agree. The alox models needed to have the full toolset. I've put alot of scissors on pioneer and they work fantastic.

I've made some alox compacts too, they are nice and slim.

What the heck happened to the alox bantam?

+1. This. I've been looking for one forever.

With regard to the other models, it's basically whatever floats your boat, I think. For people who drink a lot of wine, the corkscrew is probably indispensable. There's a model with cigar punches. :) Unless you smoke cigars regularly, cigar punches are useless. But if you do smoke cigars regularly, cigar punches are indispensable. I like the Wenger Alox Soldier and the Vic Alox Pioneer and Farmer a lot.

How effective do you find the screwdriver tip of the orange peeler? Also, I'm curious if the tip of the file on the Executive works well for Phillips screws.

Batams are discontinued. Actually almost all alox is now. Victorinox only makes 3 models right now. Pioneer, farmer and cadet. When my vic dealer told me that I bought up all the rest of his harvesters, electricians etc... Sad really as I love the alox models.

The screwdriver tip is okay, but obviously not as stout as the screwdriver tip on the can opener blades on the standard SAKs. It does reach further into narrow spaces, though. As for the Executive's file tip, yes, it does fit into Phillips, but I don't feel it's strong enough for much twisting forces. Maybe for very, very light turning.

As of now as stated there is only 3 alox models being produced for North America. I'm afraid the alox will be put to rest for good not to far down the road. As for the bantam I have one but never used it as I find its to small for my liking.

I have a Black grip cadet sak and i actually love the nail file it makes a good emergency phillips screw driver and it keeps my nails clean.

I think the Compact is one of the best urban EDC knives on the market. 15 tools in two layers - the slimmest 91mm model with full-size blade and scissors. It carries well dress pants and in jeans. The corkscrew gets lots of home use and it has saved a more than a few parties and bbqs. The pen is also a frequent lifesaver. Excluding the Vic Classic, the Compact is the only SAK I own multiple copies of. Obviously it won't work for you if you must have a phillips head driver. I split the difference by carrying a Vic Rambler on my keychain. The Rambler's small PH driver is quite functional. Anyway, if I could only have one knife, it would be the Compact.
