Ram's horn smell?

Hola,
I have a hunter with a ram's horn handle which I like very much, however it seems to give off an odor that I can't get rid of. I've tried washing it with ivory soap and water (and of course giving a bit of a mineral oil bath afterwards) and it doesn't get any better. Further, the smell comes off on your hands.

Is this typical for Ram's horn? I've not experienced it with buffalo horn, ivory or stag. Is there some way to seal it, perhaps? What would a clear polyurethane spar or something similar do to it?

Thanks,
Warren

Ive never seen or heard of this before with Rams horn anyway. I do remember gagging from an antelope handle once.

Could it have been treated with a protine oil [plant, animal] that has gone rancid? Never had bone, antler, horn smell as long as it was well dried before use.

You might ask on Ed Fowler's forum. I consider him the 'master of sheephorn' these days. Maybe he could offer some advise.

I also have never had one smell bad after I finished it on a handle. even a piece of horn that I recovered from a rotting carcass didn't smell after I had it finished. It sure did stink while I was grinding it though.

I wonder if this might have some dust left on it from the finishing process--although I'd have figured washing it would have removed it. I'll check out Ed's forum too. Thanks!

I have mounted several ram's the problem is you just can't wash the goat out of a goat those things stink no matter what its probably a tangy, sage, spoiled milk smell right

I smell like that right now and a little like elk piss

Reminded me of a friend of mine that was after a big bull elk. He had been tracking it a long time in the snow and every time he got anywhere close it would take off, go a mile or so and lay back down. This happened several times and he was being real quiet in the snow and all, and figured it could smell him. He came to a spot of snow the elk had "yellowed" and rubbed it all over his clothes and even his beard. LOL, said in 1/2 an hour he was puking and had to give up.
