OK I know this is off topic so please be gentle. I was over at a buddies house checking out a couple of his new custom guns and he pulls out a couple or Randall knives. Now I have seen the prices on these knives but never held one or used one on anything, but for me I was kind of unimpressed for a $600 to $800 dollar knives he had. What about Randall knives makes them worth so much and so desirable.

My dad has been trying to decide on what Randall knife to buy for years. Another one of those brands that makes a lot of stuff but nothing that really speaks to him. There was some media source that got all the Tacti-sexuals on the Randall knife kick. Now that's back when Tacti-sexual was pre-tactical pants days. Book or movie, thinking it was a book. Kind of like Tom Berenger in ‘Shoot to Kill’ with the Gerber BMF.

My Randall knives say “Rowen” on the side.

Vince Gil even had a song out once that mentions a Randall Knife

He might want to hurry up--current wait is at 58 months if you order directly from Randall :)

I have to admit that Randall knives are my guilty pleasure. I order one as often as they let me (every 3 months). Yes, it's stupid to wait 5 years for a knife. Yes, it's dumb to pay upwards of $800 for some that I've bought. No, they don't do anything that a Becker or ESEE can't do. So, I've got absolutely no good reason to justify them. But, I still can't stop myself!!!!:D

Oh he’s long over it now. I always figure if you’re having to really work to pick something you actually like, it’s time to move on.

Hand made products will always take more time/labor. That must be it.

The Randall Knife

My father had a Randall knife
My mother gave it to him
When he went off to WWII
To save us all from ruin
If you've ever held a Randall knife
Then you know my father well
If a better blade was ever made
It was probably forged in hell

My father was a good man
A lawyer by his trade
And only once did I ever see
Him misuse the blade
It almost cut his thumb off
When he took it for a tool
The knife was made for darker things
And you could not bend the rules

He let me take it camping once
On a Boy Scout jamboree
And I broke a half an inch off
Trying to stick it in a tree
I hid it from him for a while
But the knife and he were one
He put it in his bottom drawer
Without a hard word one

There it slept and there it stayed
For twenty some odd years
Sort of like Excalibur
Except waiting for a tear

My father died when I was forty
And I couldn't find a way to cry
Not because I didn't love him
Not because he didn't try
I'd cried for every lesser thing
Whiskey, pain and beauty
But he deserved a better tear
And I was not quite ready

So we took his ashed out to sea
And poured `em off the stern
And threw the roses in the wake
Of everything we'd learned
When we got back to the house
They asked me what I wanted
Not the lawbooks not the watch
I need the things he's haunted

My hand burned for the Randall knife
There in the bottom drawer
And I found a tear for my father's life
And all that it stood for

We've got a Randall forum here:

I'm good at changing song lyrics to suit me, so don't be suprised if you hear a guy singing a song about ESEE.

My kids still give me grief because after they got older they realized the songs they heard me singing were no where close to the way they were actually written :D

Same appeal as busse IMO. Whatever that is. They're great knives but if you're not into them then they're not worth the cash. They don't do anything magical for what you're paying for it and most people won't notice any superior durability or edge holding that they may or may not provide. You can buy a custom that will perform just as well or better as a randall or busse for 1/2 the price.

I was buying Randall knives long before ESEE was in existence. I sent both of my brothers off to Viet Nam with a Randall #1 and a Model 19 S&W. (Both came back, and both still have their special .357 and knife)
I have 'processed' a boat load of deer and hogs with a #11 and a #25.
Are Randall Made Knives worth the money? Are they all that good, being made of O1 and 440B steel?
For me, the answer is an unqualified and emphatic...................YES :D
