Hello Everyone!

What production piece (non-custom) most closely resembles a Randall 1 or 14?

I'm looking for a blend of combat, tactical, survival, and fighting characteristics. I don't have the time or money for a Randall (which seems to me like the ideal blend of these qualities).

Specifically I want: Bowie-style, full tang, adequate crossguard, well balanced, good fit/finish.

I checked out Kabar and Ontario, (wanted full tang, better fit/finish, a little nicer). Also checked out SOG's bowie and recon bowie, and Cold Steel's R1.

Everyone on this forum seems to like the Busse Hell Razor, and it definitely seems like a better knife than the ones listed above. However, it seems more like a chopper -- more utility-oriented, and it's getting away from the Randall design that I like so much (with the crossguard and fighter-look).

Strider is supposed to be a good tactical fixed blade, but I'm not sure about the cord-handles and again I wanted more of a Randall design.

Well, there it is. Any help from you knife experts will be appreciated!

If you want something dimensionally close to a Randall 1, get a busse SJTac or an old SJ (Satin Jack). There are many knives like that. The Hell raizor is not a chopped, it will not have the mass for it. I'm sure it will chop like any knife that size will, but it will be light and fast, no so much a heavy lopper.

That's interesting. It's difficult to get a sense of the Hell Razor's dimensions from the web site. All the pictures are from an odd angle -- maybe it makes it seem thicker and the point less tapered than it really is.

Well, this might be the way to go, but do you think it can still function as a fighter without a crossguard? seems scary :)

There was a review of a Model 1 in Knives Illustrated about 6 months ago, I think Black Jack built it.

wow. Those look nice -- says they're discontinued and unavailable now though ... :(
Someone mentioned Extrema Ratio in a different thread. I don't have any experience with these, but they seem really nice. How do they compare to the Hell Razor/Satin Jack? The Extrema's seem a little more combat, tactical, fghting oriented, I think...

Um... I changed my mind. That Busse Hell Razor looks like one Hell of a knife! I like the Jack a lot too. I guess I should start a new thread...
