Being new to this forum, I beg your indulgence if my question is naive! A friend has a first model(?) Randall from 1973 that he has owned since new, and I am interested in buying my first Randall. It has the original sheath, has been stored in the cardboard sleeve, and is unused. The handle is stacked leather, the guard is brass. What is a fair price for such a knife? He's asking $550.
Thanks!

Thanks M-P!
Would you venture a guess as to value?? No commitment!

look in Ebay to shop around first, better deal can be found there.Melvin, most of the knives in the link you post are quite high,IMHO that is.

I would buy a 1973 Model #1 at that price, if it is in that type of condition. I would not pay that for a recent Model #1, but 1973? Yes.

cstorr2004,its one made in 1975 on ebay right now, bidding price is $417.i myself just recieved a model 14 from the post office today, cant wait to open it.

Sweet...I'll go find it and buy it at that price. I've owned three (the only one I have left is my dad's #1 from 1971. I was offered 650 for it, and it's used. The other two were early 80's late 70's versions and sold them for 600 apiece, both carried but never sharpened. Just going by my personal experience. If that guy doesn't buy that knife for $550 I want to be put on the list for 2nd in line...

O.K. Thanks for your opinions and comments. I called my friend and we agreed to the deal. I just have to get out there (45 minutes away) and pick it up! $600 Canadian, which is about $550 U.S. I'll post pics when I get my grubby hands on it, and maybe you experts can tell me what I've got!!

Waynorth,i am darn sure u will enjoy the knife,i nearly faint when i opened my model 14 last nite,it's awesome, what a real knife should be.cstorr2004,the item on ebay was once belong to a P-51 mustang pilot,i can not verify that but thats what the auction said.

You got me worried Smile! What if this knife turns me into a Randall collector??

Well, I bought the knife, and finally took delivery. It was purchased in 1973, in Washington state. Except for the usual slight handling marks, it's mint, never used/carried, and stored outside the sheath. I am the second owner. Here it is: please cast your critical eyes on it, and tell me if you see anything wrong! Thanks to all!

I added a scan of the pommel because the first one has an optical illusion.

That's real purty...you need to take it into the woods and dig some holes with it. Can't wait for my new Model 14. Only 2 short years to go.

Have my pictures disappeared, or is it my computer/dsl?
Anyone still see the pics??

Hi Waynorth,

Beautiful knife in beautiful condition! Just curious: Do you have any documentation that the knife was made in '73? The reason I ask is that the majority of leather handled knives from '73 that I've seen have the "three thick / two thin" spacer sets (The outside red spacers are thick bright red. A year or two earlier they were thick dull red).

Regards,

Ron

Ron, the knife is probably a '71 or '72. My friend bought it off the shelf, in '73, and said it had been in the store for a while. Paid $125.00!! Of course that wouldn't happen today! I do have a letter from him, and consider him honest and reliable. Unfortunately, he's lost the original receipt! Thanks for your eagle eye!!

Good morning, Waynorth

Just FYI the price of an 8" Model 1 in 1973 was the 1972 catalog price of $50.00. The closest I can come to $125.00 was the catalog price of $130.00 in 1984.

Best,

Ron
