98648616-9E3C-4E12-854A-79D6F961D158.jpeg 12-9 arrived yesterday - it may be going back to A.G. Russell.

I really misjudged how massive it would be - I just wanted a knife with a little bit longer blade. The picture is the 12-9 above the Model 14, and doesn’t give justice to how huge this 12-9 is; even here in Alaska you’d not really wear this around like I do daily with a Model 14 or even smaller 1-7. Randall says on its website that the 12-9’s it makes are between 18 and 20 ounces. This sample is 21.5.

Just a gorgeous knife, I want to keep it, but it’s hard to imagine a practical use for it for me.

Keep it. Its badass.

Even if I didn't carry that I'd still keep it. That is a beautiful knife. In truth a lot of big knives aren't used often but that doesn't stop people from buying them. :)

There is no such thing as "too big".
Beautiful knife.

Especially in Alaska... where you actually have a reasonable expectation to process bear, elk, moose, etc. Not too big in that context.

You've got some beauties there! I recently pick-up this 12-9 14, and found it just right for camping, and I'd even try hiking with it (here it is next to my 5-6). It has brown micarta, a single quillion, and a compass in the butt. But it only weighs 14oz (just knife).

Maybe it's the options that make it different; while I think your guard and end cap look stunning, they add weight and bulk. I also found that the single guard works better for me, in terms of practical tasks. It's a tough choice--that's a great looking knife (aren't all Randalls though!)... but if you were looking for a user and are really set on the big bowie, maybe search for one with different options.

Again, beautiful blades! Here are mine:
