I’m the proud owner of a Randall #18, and I’m thinking about making a matching Floyd Byrd’s style walking/survival staff. Row material is already available. But as I’m living on the wrong side of the ocean, I’m having difficulties getting information & tools.

First problem : the thread of the butt cap ! As information about this topic is very scarce, can someone confirm my measurements : 15/16” diameter & 32G pitch?
Second problem: where can I purchase at a fair price the matching tap? In Europe this exotic tool doesn’t seem to be available…

Thanks for the help !

Its going to be a thread count per inch, and the diameter of the ouside of the threads. I am assuming you measured the inside of the threads, at 15/16ths. That would be a 1" tap. The thread count per inch will tell you the other part. 1" x 14 TPI would be typical, though it could be something else entirely as well.

I found some tools on ebay that I couldn´t find in Europe.
You might find what you need.
Maybe Randall can answer your question

That size of tap won't be cheap so you will want to make sure it's right.

It's much easier to measure the outside of a thread than the inside, so

Take the butt cap to an industrial fastener supplier and have them measure the thread telling them that it is probably not a metric thread

When you mention "G" AFAIK that's associated with a Whitworth thread, which is a 55degreet thread instead of a 60 degree.
Maybe it is, maybe it isnt

They probably lathe cut both thread components, so you may not be able to buy standard fasteners or tools whatever thread it turns out to be.

While I'm thinking about it, why do you need a tap if you want to thread a male thread to go inside that knife socket ?

I think I"d be looking for a screw with a male thread, then fitting and welding that inside the staff.

Many walking stick, cane, Knife making, and outdoor craft supply catalogs carry walking stick fittings and joints. Check a few out and see if you get lucky.

Silly as this sounds, you might want to email Randal and ask about parts availability and the thread size.

Filling out your profile would help a lot.
