Is there any history or reports of the model #18 survival knife breaking out in the field?

I've seen a few that were beat to hell, way beyond what a knife should be asked to do, that weren't broken. I've also seen knives by many makers that were broken, often from twisting while wedged, batoning, or both in cold weather. Randall's Model #18 doesn't have any particular propensity towards breakage. That's been my knowledge so far for the last twenty or so years. Is there a specific reason you asked, or were you just curious?

Thanks for the reply. I was looking into getting a hollow handle knife. Plus I also wanted to start a collection of Randalls at the same time.

"On #18’s, we use 1100 degree silver solder for the 172,000 psi necessary for strength of attaching the hilts and handles." - Gary Randall

"The blade is soldered at both sides of the hilt and then the handle is soldered to the hilt. In 30 years, I’ve seen only one #18 returned with the handle apart from the hilt and it was heavily abused." - Scott Maynard, Randall Shop Foreman

I dare you to break one. No, I double dare you! :D

Great knife. You won't be disappointed.

That's a great track record but we all know more Randall's that live in safes than in the woods. I use all mine but don't have a 18 YET to try out myself. If used correctly there should never be a problem.

Thanks for the replies. It is good to know that it has a great record. Now I won't feel nervous about buying one. I just have to finish saving up for it in the configuration that I want.
