I am thinking of purchasing a model 18.But I am unsure of the joint between the blade and handle.I now own a couple of Chris Reeves and they are very strong.Do any of you own the model #18 and if so what do you think about the the way the handle is attached?Would it make a good trail/camp knife?I wouldn't be chopping down trees but it would get severe use.Thanks.

Booger, in this month's Tactical Knives Magazine the survival instructor profiled was from Canada and the article said that he had used a model 18 for many years. This was in the northern Ontario area and he swore by that knife.

Well,if you already own a couple Chris Reeve Hollow handled knives you own the best there is hands down. While it would be difficult to break the Randall 18,it just isn't possible for it to be as solid as the Reeve one piece based on its construction. If you would like an 18 to round out your collection,I would say go for it.My opinion though if it was a survival situation,I would take the Reeve Hollow handle over the 18 any day of the week.

Thank's guys.I did see the Tactical Knives issue that had the knife. That is one thing thatgot me thinking.Though I know it couldn't be as strong as the Chris Reeves I guess I was just looking for an excuse to buy one.One excuse is as good as the other I reckon.

If your looking for a hard core hollow handle knife, check out Colin Cox. I have had and used numerous HH knives from Cox, Parrish, Crain, Randall and Reeve..The larger CRK knives are very durable knives..I find that the handles are a little short..

With that being said,
Colin Cox constructed a knife for me that is simply outstanding and has so far laid my weakness worries of HH to rest..

I wanted the design to be sound and have NO weakness for extream use.

The blade is 7.25 long x 5/16 thick D2..A big nasty spear point with no sawteeth..The handle is one of his custom milled oversized models that is 5.5 long x 1.25 in diam.

I have hammered, pried, chopped and split with this knife...No problems, no worries..

I have another one coming in this week. It's based on the Jack Crain MUST-Kit(Medical-Utility-Surgical-Tool)...It has a short 3.75 inch drop point blade, single guard, 5 inch long x 1 inch diam. hollow handle. It's built to house Steri strips, pain meds, sutures and needles..I will ride on my pack strap..It's sort of a last ditch med kit with a blade attached to it..

Vermonster, I'd be really interested in seeing pics of your Collin MUST-Kit knife. I wasn't aware that Crain made these as a regular item. So far as I knew, the only model in existence belongs to Warren C. Norwood, author of the post-apocalypes novel "Shudderchild". According to the blurb in the book, Norwood and Crain are buds and Crain made the knife portrayed in the novel especially for Norwood.

Have you ever read the book? It's a really good story, and in it the MUST-Kit knife is used by a "Healer" who carries it as a lst-ditch weapon/med kit. Great book and I was really intrigued by Norwood's description of the knife, so a pic of yours would be really cool.

V Shrake,

Jack Crain makes them and can still build one if ordered. I was going to order one but I did not want to wait 8+ months..There is one for sale right now at a knife store in Japan, in Yen it worked out to be 565.00...I could have got one from Jack with an LEO discount for just shy of 400.00
I have a pic of the Crain MUST-Kit. I can't post them though.

Instead I asked Colin to make me one. It cost me 285.00 and less than 2 months wait time.

I have never read the book you speak of. I guess I should. The first time I heard of such a blade was on a thread over at Knifeforums.com
I believe it was you who mentioned it. It got me thinking and searching. After speaking with Jack Crain about it, I decided to skip the long wait and have Colin build one as a companion to my big hollow handle.

Hey Matt, long time no see. I got my custom knife from Dave Beck! It's awesome. I lost your e-mail address. Let me have it and I'll shoot you over some pics I took of it.

Can't wait to see your new Cox knife.
