Bouncing around in my head with what knife to get for myself for Christmas and have narrowed it down to the three in the title. Woodswalking and camping knife to be used for around the camp chores. Not a hunter. Want it to be good size and heft (I've held the Randall and Pacific, but not the A1). Carbon or stainless is not an issue, nor is sharpening. I'd like to know which you would choose or, if you have another that you like better, which of those three you would give your dad if he gave you the list. Have at it guys...I always like what you come up with!

Sweet! I love it. If it's not inappropriate to ask, what was the ballpark figure for the re-handle? Thanks.

of those 3--get an A1 Blank and have Mike Stewart of Bark River put a Handle on.

That re-handled A1 looks great Bill. :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

To the OP. A Randall #5 will take about 48 months to get if you are ordering it from them. Not sure if you found a dealer with one in stock.

I'd go for the A1. Reasonably priced, and Fallkniven is an excellent company. I have the F1, and it's probably the best "all around" knife I own.

Yep, like the rehandled A1.

What would I get my Dad? The Randall of course. He would appreciate it's collectors value, but would never use it. What would I treat myself to? The Fallkniven A1!

I am not sure Bark River is still doing rehandle jobs. They are pretty overwealmed with business. I had a bunch made up before they stopped--they do wonderful work.

$55.00--you choose handle materials

I can't tell you how much better it feels--worth every penny

Holy Cow! That is a great price! And, you get to choose the material?
Wow!!! I have to get in on some of that action! Thanks a million!

Took about 2 months I think---
They also reshaped the tang to make it more ergonomic as well..

Still thinking...A1 sounds like a favorite here. I can get ahold of a Randall...Chris Reeve is tempting, but now I've (sort of ) got it narrowed down to A1 or Randall. By the way, longbow50 and Texasboy - willing to adopt you. :D

Randall, no question.
I have a model 5 in 01, which has been my primary knife for years. Its an awesome knife. In fact, I am set to receive my second model 5 in about 6 weeks, which will be a gift for my son (in a few years).

Went with the A1. Thanks for the thoughtful input...allowed me to make a better decision rather than rattling around alone in my noggin! Saved me money too. All the best.

i too ordered the A1 now. last week i bought the pacific. i was fortunate enough to find it in my local knife shop. but while my purchase was rather impulsive, i read up on the "hard facts" and found out about the lack of performance you find in the crk.

shame, really. it is freaking beautiful. but probably more of a hunting knife than a survival/outdoor knife.

I have used a Randall 5-6 and 1-6 quite alot and they are great knives, cant chop well but I have split some very hard wood with the 5-6 and it held true, never had any edge damage and the stainless holds an edge well and will never rust.

Not sure what "lack of performance" facts you read, but don't shy away from CRKs. They perform great, assuming you actually want a knife. If your looking for something to whack with a 5lb sledge you may want to try something else, like a steel wedge.

Personally, I've used my GB to make a shelter that my wife and I slept in. It performed admirably.

i'm sorry, i shouldd have chosen my words more carefully. what i meant was the "lack of capability".
yes, we all have seen that destruction test, and no, no one intends to hit on a knife with a hammer.

however, the serrations on the blade make it hard to e.g. carve wood or make a spring snare.
not saying it is impossible. but uncomfortable.

if it wasn't for the serrations, i would've probably kept the crk.

and honestly, why would you need serrations on a 5-7" blade anyways? i'm not cutting rope all day long :-)

but aye ... to each his own. very glad you're happy with yours.
