Randall Astro question from new member.

Hi guys,
I'm new to Blade Forums and this is my first post. I would like to purchase a Randall Astro knife as similar as can be to the one Gordon Cooper designed and it will be my first Randall. What should I order? Your comments will be greatly appreciated.

You have no choice. the blade and hilt will be stainless steel and the black micarta handle scales (hollowed out) will be held to the knife with stainless steel bolts/nuts.
In recent years, unfortunately, Randall seems to have added a peculiar "bump" to the top part of the blade that wasn't there for the astronauts; also, I believe, the astronauts had knives with brown micarta handles. Therefore, I don't think you will be able to get a new one from the factory having the same configuration as those the astronauts had.
 
Thanks for the info, cut_n_run. It's too bad Randall changed the original model, but it's still a cool looking knife!

Yes, it is indeed a cool knife. I like the Astro a LOT. A while ago I paid a good premium to get an older one that doesn't have the bump. I wish I could convince the Randall shop to sell me an Astro with exactly one special feature: I really want one that has a standard Model 14-style black micarta finger-grip handle.

Well, I have just ordered my Astro knife. Bump and all will be mine in...54 months! The good thing is I have just won a model 3-5" on eBay. Can't wait to get my hands on that one!

The 3-5" is one of my two most favorites, the other is the #26. Both are excellent for most anything but not too big. I can skin a deer with a 4 or 5" blade a lot better than any 6" or larger blade. And you can still clean tree rats with the smaller blades as well.
 
Navallas, I like the Model 3 - 5" too! Mine is due to be shipped just about a year from now: SS blade, stag with finger grips, nickel-silver hilt.

Mine is the same as the one you have on order except mine has a brass hilt with black and brass spcers.
