This older seven-spacer Randall Model #5-6 came to me pretty rough shape with a nasty old sheath - so I sent it to my friend Reid Hyken, owner of Sharpshooter Sheath Systems for a new sheath; because, in my opinion, he's making some of the best using leather sheaths available today. While talking on the phone, he was raving about the leather carving skills of his new hire, Alicia.
Already owning one of Alicia's carved leather sheaths, I definitely wanted another - as Reid said on the phone, this is going to be my user field knife, so I decided on a Montana themed sheath - in this case, a pair of Timber Wolves howling at the moon! Alicia does great work, and can be contacted through Reid at http://sharpshootersheaths.com/
Further, while there I asked Mike Stewart at Bark River Knife & Tool (BRK&T) http://www.barkriverknifetool.com/ to refinish it because A. Mike is a friend, B. knows how to refinish an old knife without screwing it up, and C. in my experience, older Randall's sent to RMK often come back looking like newer knives...he agreed.
This late '60's knife had the old style softer grind lines, and I wanted to keep the original look - also, the softer grind lines lend themselves well to a lightly convexed (and now wicked sharp) blade edge...
I couldn't be happier! The knife refinishing, the sheath quality, and the added artwork are all just great! Thanks to all involved, you guys rock!
p.s. A word about the sheath strap - if you like sharp knives as I do, cutting your keeper strap is always a concern...you won't with this one as the strap tucks out of the way; very clever!
