can someone tell me how old this knife is. It is a Randall Bowie. I think its a model 12 due to the stamp on the sheath as you can see from the picture. It has a 9 " blade. I would also like to know about how much the knife is worth. This is a knife of a friend who inherited from his grandfather who has since passed away. Thanks in advance.

Also can anyone give me any tips on cleaning the knife? Or will it be better if left as is?

The 12-9 Sportsman's bowie was introduced in 1954. The shop stopped pinning handles "around" 1958. Your friend's knife was made somewhere in that span. The market value depends a lot on condition, but the photos you posted are not good enough to make much of a determination other than "good" at a minimum. "Leave it as it is" or it will lose value! Bowies seem to have less of a collectibility following than most other models for whatever reason(s). It it gets put up on e-bay, it's a crap shoot. I know you're looking for a rough order of magnitude, so I'll throw out $1,200-$1,700. What your friend actually realizes may be different. Other people might have different opinions.

thanks for your help guys. This is prety exciting and its not even my knife. From the reaserch ive done i realized that the sheath placed the knife somewhere in the 60's but I did not know about the pinning of the handle.

I jsut called him to give him the guestimate of $1,000 and he plans on taking the knife to the randall office in orlando to get it appraised.

I know the pictures are not that great, but thats what he sent me. I have looked at the knife and its mostly just dirty and it looks old. the blade does have about 2 small almost microscopic pitts on the blade and one about the size of a pin head. Im not sure if thats somehting that could be fixed or cleaned up, but the knife i would say is in at least GOOD shape. maybe after a good cleaning it be a little better. Im not sure if he would even want to clean it up, and he does not want to sell it becuase of the sentimental value he has for it. Thanks again for your help guys and if I get any better pictures i will post them on here.
