Anyone have some info on the Smithsonian model 12 with a 11' blade, like how do you like it, what kind of handel do you have on it? I have one on order, like to know, what you think of it,maybe a picture of it. thanks Bowie 1953

I have one like knife H on page 22 of the Randall catalog.
Of course, I have the matching model 13-12. See knife E,
same page. Cliche, I know.

I did not buy these to use. If I wanted to use a model 12-11,
I would want a diferent handle style. Probably straight or commando.
It is about as large of a knife as I would carry before going with a machete. If you want a large, heavy knife, it is a good choice.

You know. a single finger grip handle might be a good user. And a Border Patrol handle would look good.

I seem to have an "I" problem in this post. I'll try to get better.
DARN!! Did it again. I'm sorry. DARN IT!!

I'm inclined personally to think that the Raymond Thorpe Bowie from RAndall is about the largest knife one might practically use..the weight of the "smithy" can run as much as two or so pounds ....and that's alot to be on a belt or in the hand....the Thorpe will typically run around 20-26 ounces (per the Randall catalog).

Even the confederabe bowie might be a better choice for a "user" knife....again...just my opinion....

I have a 12-13" and a 13-12" (older ones with polished stag) that I have displayed in a shadow box....I think these big Randalls are best for an impressive display....not that they couldn't be used...it is just that Randall makes many, many "users" that I personally prefer on a daily basis....

But, after all, they're Randalls...so you cannot and will not go wrong...:D

I like mine a lot. I ordered mine with the Black Micarta concave handle, Lugged Hilt, Scalloped Brass Butt Cap and collar and Name Plate. At first it seemed heavy and awkward after handling and getting used to it that disappeared. Even at 2.2 pounds It's actualy quite fast in handling.I have done some test cutting with it and it out performs some of my swords.
It's a very good choice and well worth the investment.
