Any help here would be appreciated. I have a 6 inch Randall model one that is currently at the factory to be re-handled and am having problems deciding on what spacer to get.

I am having a black micarta border patrol handle put on, and a nickel silver hilt.

I am debating between several spacer options:

1. all black
2. all silver (aluminum)
3. alternating silver and black
4. the two above with nickel silver versus aluminum.
5. traditional red white and blue

As I said I am having a really tough time deciding. It is hard when you don't have pictures. I have never seen a model one with the border patrol handle.

I want a tactical/rugged look. I think that all black spacers would achieve this, but might look kind of crappy.

Does anyone have any advice, or better yet have any pictures that they might be able to send me?

Any help is much appreciated. AS fellow knife nuts I am sure that you can appreciate my desire for perfection on this one.

thanks

Matt

The Model 1 with the Border Patrol handle was called the 16-1 Special fighter.

I've had and sold two of them in the last five years. They were a non-catalog knife and not too common.

Neither of mine had spacers though. The handle was applied like the Model 14. Full tang, exposed along the back. Nickle silver hilt, black micarta handle, no spacers.

Great feeling knives. That BP handle is a good design.

I have had several Randall knives rehandled at their shop. When I have a micarta and nickle silver hilt combination I don't have any spacers used. This is also the way Randall shows their Border Patrol handle in their catalog section "Handles and Features". You can get additional ideas from their catalog or at their web site. Here are some of the combinations that I have. Bubba

Good morning, bowler1! Didn't we do some business a while back?

I purchased a Randall #1-6 a few years back with nearly the same features you are looking at. It was a 6" stainless blade, nickle silver double hilt -- I asked them to leave it very thick, which they did -- a black micarta border patrol handle, and a duralumin butt cap. I had the aluminum and black spacers applied and it looked great.

I also thought about the tactical nature of the aluminum spacers but decided it wasn't any worse than the duralumin butt cap so went ahead with it. A little electrician tape can solve that if you decide to carry it in the field.

One thing I would consider though. Although the nickle silver butt cap matches exactly with the nickle silver hilt, it is an extremely heavy (in weight) alternative. It will change the balance of the knife rearward enough to be noticeable. The 6" blade just doesn't have the mass to balance that heavy of a butt cap (I'm not sure the 7" does either, but it looked great on a 12-9 Sportsman's Bowie I did with a black border patrol handle and aluminum and black spacers).

I really liked this knife and wish I hadn't sold it now -- which is why I have no pictures. I also ordered it with a black sheath for a few bucks more. It looked great! Hope this helps.

bowler1: forget everything I said about the nickle silver butt cap, I went back and reread your message and realized you are having the nickle silver hilt applied, not the nickle silver butt cap. The concept is still true but is irrelevant in your case. Sorry -- Woodbury

Thanks to all for the help!

I was originally going to go without spacer on the knife, but according to Randall, he must produce the model one with spacers--why I don't know.

I am starting to lean toward the silver and black spacers, but will still continue to chew on it.

thanks for your help and I welcome more
