Randall Knockoffs- Question from a Heretic

Hi All,

I have a question that I just KNOW is going to raise hackles, so let me start by saying I don't want or need to hear any of the various and sundry arguments in favour of a top quality knife. I KNOW THEM ALL and for the most part I AGREE with them. SO spare the bandwitdh and just stick to the question please?

Ok, here goes...

I am enamoured of the Randall No.25 Trapper. I think it's one of the most elegant medium knives in the world. Some day I WILL have a example of the genuine article in my collection.

But right now, especially with the pathetic performance of Canadian Monopoly Money, I simply can't justify the cost of a real Randall. This knife is going to live on my belt not in a collector drawer so there's no 'investment' to worry about, just day to day performance.

So, my question, does anyone make an affordable, but still useful, copy of the Model 25? I know there are plenty of 'drop point hunters' out there, but none quite match the 25's style- at least not in my mind's eye.

If anyone can offer me a pointer to a good candidate (it needn't be a perfect copy, but close will likely do) I would be very grateful.

And now, I'm going to go wash my mouth out with soap and light a thousand candles to ask forgivness for wanting to buy a 'knock off cheapie'.

Sincere thanks in advance,
Jake

Good question. I'm also enamored with the Randall 25-6. The only problem is the the three year wait. If there aren't any copies out there, can any of you guys point us in the direction of a maker who can make a reasonable facsimile? Thanks

Allen Blade makes knives in that vein of construction. And his work is very well done.

Wow, such helpful replies already. I apologize for misjudging the amount of push back my question would receive.

nifrand, do you happen to know the model name of the Blackjack knife you had in mind? There's quite a few BJK's on Ebay and while I don't mind looking at them all, it runs the peril of finding ANOTHER knife I 'just have to have'. Mr. Visa will be quite cross with me again this month if that happens

I believe that http://www.agrussell.com had some of the Blackjack copies shown on their website recently, but I can't find them now. You might want to give them a call if the Blackjack turns out to be what you're looking for.

How can you call anything a Randall knockoff??? Randall doesn't make original designs ... they make traditional knives ... all those designs have been around for centuries....

I have a blackjack 'woodsman' that is near identical to the Randall 25 (funny that?!)

It is mint condition, and I guess if I chose to sell it, with the Australian dollar the way it is, we could both do very well....

mmmm......do you have any knives for trade???

Hey There Gundy

Where in Aus you from?

Hi James,

I am located in Gippsland, approx 2 hrs from Melb.....

You are obviously interested in knives, what sort are you interested in???

There are a number of "graduates" from the Randall knife factory that have long since made a name for themselves as independent makers. Many of these guys still make very Randall-like knives.

Cougar, your point is very well taken. One of the things I LIKE about Randall knives is the 'traditional' styling.

I suppose the reason why I say a 'knockoff' is that I'm looking for a knife that is as close as possible to a Randall No.25, but at a more moderate price. I've seen many a drop point hunter, but all have been 'almost, but not entirely unlike' the No.25. None quite match the lines of the Randall.

Gundy, please drop me a line at thjalgrimr@yahoo.ca and we can take the haggling off list
