I got lucky again and thought you would like a look. I took this one to the Randall shop today and yes it is real. Have any of you seen another one of these? It appears to be a Model 14 with a very long swedge on the clip blade.

Also received a letter of provenance that it was carried in the field by a US Marine Corps officer.
The blade is 7-5/16 inches long. Johnson riveted sheath.

Best regards,

Rhett Stidham

Was the swedge an "after the shop" modification? Or did it leave like that? Special-ordered?

Jim

Gary Randall said it did leave the shop like that. When that knife was made you could get special blades ground. Regards, Rhett

I wish I could get lucky like that ! And to think I searched around the biggest military fair the UK holds, and all I could come up with was some seriously over priced poorly looked after original Ek's.

Well done, and nice to see that the 14's are still out there strong. I'm still waiting to get lucky and find a 14 Tenite with canteen snap, but I haven't been holding my breath...

An interesting top edge grind, I guess that would help give more of a dagger type point, to allow for max penetration much like the model 1 gives, but with all the same details, shape and design in the rest of the tool as a model 14.

I, HAVE A MODEL 15 AIRMAN IN MINT CON. MADE IN THE 70S.THE SHEATH IS IN ALSO MOST MINT CON THE KNIFE HAS NEVER BEEN USED. BUT THE LEATHER FOR LEGS IS MISSING. THE SHEATH HAS BEEN CANDLE WAXED ON THE THREADES. THE SHEATH HAS NO RIVETS IN THE SHEATH. WOULD LIKE TO SELL BUT DONT KNOW WHAT IT WORTH. WB

Sounds pretty cool!

If it was me, I'd put it on ebay and let 'the market' set the value...

Mel

New member, glad to be here. I also apparently have a Model 14 Randall. Is there any more info which is available on this? TIA Jerry:D

I would need to see the knife or a photo, to help you. Otherwise, just a guess. Regards, Rhett Stidham

Jerry, Attach a photo here. Too much to type (two fingered,)generally speaking. Or bring it to a show and ask someone selling Randalls. See listing this Forumtwo shows we will attend this month. Regards, Rhett

Upon further review, this newbie realizes that he does not have the long swedge like yours does Rhett. It does have a green tenite handle(i think) along with green verdigris and stains on the blade. This has not been cleaned and would like any advice on what the best course to take on caring for and preserving this knife and my other Randalls;)

Jerry, Yes you have a Tenite handle Model 14. I would leave it like it is other than getting the surface gunk off of it. Do not store it in the sheath. Value: $3500-$4500.00. Regards, Rhett

Rhett, you quote prices...
Value: $3500-$4500.00. Regards, Rhett
So I'm curious, is that what you're buying them for these days, or just what you're selling them for? ;)

The reason I ask is; I'm kinda new to all this 'Randall Made' stuff, and am having a hard time figuring out what makes a knife that originally sold for $35, 'worth' 100 times that?

Mel

Sheldon/Mel,

You know as well as I do, the price I quoted is a collector price. This knife mint, might bring half again what I quoted, to a collector. Some dealers will pay 50 to 70 percent of the collector selling price, depending on the condition. The poorer the condition, the longer it takes to sell the knife, usually. Therefore, your money is tied up longer and you have to buy at a cheaper price. The knife in the picture, speaks for it's self in regard to condition.

The 100 times over the original value question is answered by the collector. The collector wants a piece of history and since there are more collectors than knives available for some models, they make the price with their zeal to obtain said knife.

Regards, Rhett

I just received these interesting photos from an appraisal service that has asked me for the value. The handle photo, that I had not seen before, makes the knife less valuable than I had originally thought. After looking at these photos, iwould $2,500-3,000.00. Regards, Rhett

I am considering the sale of this knife and wanted a second opinion to be on the safe side. Had I known that they would go to you I would have saved my money and not used them. I hope I did not step on any toes by doing this. :( As you know I am new to this field and it's players. Please accept my sincere thanks to you Mr, Stidham for all the knowledge and information that you provided to me and to all RMK fans on a daily basis.

Jerry, None of my toes were stepped on. The prices I gave are what I feel the knife will bring at a knife show. Internet auction prices are another ball game and very unpredictable. regards, Rhett Stidham

Rhett,

I've never seen a Tenite handled Randall that wasn't pinned. Could this knife be a (rare) transition between Tenite and Micarta construction?

Thanks,

Ron

Ron,

I called Pete Hamilton to make sure on this. The last ones were epoxied on. These were the ones that came back to the Randall shop with handle problems. Pete says he knows for sure on this, as he was there when they came back for repairs.

Best regards,

Rhett Stidham

P.S. Thanks for keeping me on my toes.
