Why does the saw-tooth count on Randall Knives vary so much from knife to knife. I counted mine it has 21 teeth. I've found from looking at others twenty one different model 18's they vary from 25 to as low as 11.They were new and older models with 7 1/2 ss and carbon blades, Solingen. 17 teeth is the most common with 5 of the 21. So I was just wondering if anyone knows why.

The only reason I could give is based on things I've read. No two Randall knives are alike. They use no jigs or templates. I've seen vast differences in knife models. From my own experience, I have had 2 model 10-3 salt water utility knives. The overall flow and size of the knife was very similar, but the blade shape was different and the handle contours were even different.

Travis,

Until he retired recently, one RMK shop worker cut all the saw teeth, on all the knives, going back some 25 years. That would be the guy to ask...

This is my understanding for what it's worth: The variations in sizes of sawteeth was dependent on "when" and "where" the teeth were ground. A brand new cutting wheel would initially cut smaller teeth. As the wheel became worn, the gap between the teeth became wider resulting in larger and fewer teeth. The general finishing room (Models 1 & 5) had one wheel and the "14" room (14, 15, 16 & 18) had another wheel.

Best,

I have a 5.5 " model 18 with 13 teeth. I'm certain of it's authenticity because I obtained while in the Army in 1979 (give or take). A reresentative from Randall came to us and demonstrated the knife. He actually put it in a vise and bent it 180 degrees and straight again. The only difference I see in mine is a letter S after (Randall Made Orlando Fla).
