Sorry for the blurry pic...

I just picked up what I was told is a Model 16 SP 1 (middle knife). When I took it out of the box and compared it to my NIB 16 SP1 (bottom), I noticed the blade height is noticeably different between the two. When compared to a Model 1-7 (top), the blade geometry is nearly identical.

At the thinnest spot above the hilt, the top (1-7) and middle knife measure ~9mm. The bottom (the NIB 16 SP1) measures ~12mm.

Am I correct in assuming that the middle knife is actually a Model 1-7 with a black finger grip micarta handle, and not a 16 SP1? If so, that would totally be amazing since I got it at a decent price for a 16, and what I'm assuming is an even better price if it's 1-7 with finger grip micarta.

Here's a pic of my model 16(top) and model 1 for comparison purposes.20250901_030545.jpg

If the middle knife is full tang construction, like the lower knife, then it is a #16SF. Model #1's are hidden tang.

The difference is not unusual. Randalls are handmade with out fixtures so variations are common.

Thanks! That makes sense...

It is full tang. What confused me is that I found a pic of a Model 1-7 with a finger groove micarta that shows at least a partial exposed tang across the top of the back of the handle (the pic didn't show the entire spine). Not sure if the knife is actually a 1-7 or a 16 in that pic though - only what they claim it to be.
