Randall price gouging?

Here is a post in the for sale forum for a model 25 with a price of $385.

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=213756

I posted a response that I thought that was too high for a model 25 which we know to cost $300(I ordered two last week from Randall myself).

Read the email I got below:

Mr. Pettit;

Do you have a receipt or other evidence showing you paid $300.00 for
the EXACT same knife as Danbo is selling?

Before you make statements in other people's for sale threads, you
better think about what you are saying, and produce the evidence to back up
your statements.

Any member here can list any price they wish on their items for sale.
It is the buyers choice to pay the price, or not.

Until evidence is produced, Mr. Pettit, or you wish to make Danbo an
offer for his knife, please stay out of this thread, and keep your
comments to yourself.

The thread you posted in was moved to the moderators forum by Cougar,
and Danbo reposted.

Thank you for your cooperation.

My response was that I do have a receipt and did he want a copy.

So was I out of line?

Thanks,

Doug

Pettit;

What you posted was more than asking me if I wanted to see your reciept.

You told me if I didn't like it....too bad.

Well, since I'm a moderator there, and you are stirring up trouble after I asked you to butt out, I think you need to be escorted to the door of the forums.

It's not your place to offer your opinion on someone else's sale. If you feel the person is price gouging, then you can tell him via private email, however, that person paid good money to be able to sell their knife on these forums. Short of the knife in question being defective, stolen, or mislabeled (or similar), if you aren't asking to buy it, or asking about it, you shouldn't be butting in to it.

If they feel their Randall is worth the extra $85 not to have to wait the 3 years until they are available from Randall direct, that is their choice. If someone wants to pay that price, so be it. In the meantime, that's between the buyer and the seller. It is rude of you to interject your opinion on the price on that guys thread - you should have taken it to private email.

So what? How much is a 36 month wait worth to you? Have you tried buying one from a dealer or on EBAY.com? You have no clue how much the guy paid for that knife. If no one wants it that price you will see the price come down in good time. Relax and enjoy; this isn't a monopoly and no one is gouging anybody here.

No I don't think it was rude and I'm not trying to stirr up trouble (Code 3). Boy we don't want that! And I think I did produce evidence of what that knife costs direct from Randall.

I was stating a fact about a price of a knife direct from Randall.

If someone is trying to over price a knife by $85, not a knife that is anything but a standard model, then maybe they ought to be posting in the dealers forum?

If I'm trying to sell a $25 knife for $100 I"m not going to worry about someone posting that--hey that knife only costs $25...

Well I guess I'm being banned. I recieved email stating that from Code 3.

That's part of the problem. He isn't trying to "sell a $25 knife for $100", he's trying to sell a hard to get knife to someone who simply doesn't want to wait for three years or get beat up on eBay trying to outbid everyone else. FWIW, making comments about posted prices on items is an easy way to get banned on several firearms boards. Completely off topic, I looked up a Gerber BMF with the compass and all which went for well over $300 on eBay - now to my mind, that is price gouging, then again, if the high bidder really wanted it, is it?

You aren't going to be banned for this - I already sent an email to you and Code 3.

While this wasn't ban worthy, it doesn't matter if you think it wasn't rude. I think it was, Code 3 thinks it was, and it wasn't your place to intrude on someone else's for sale post.

Yes, Randall's web site states that the price for a model 25 is $300 - http://www.randallknives.com/outdoorsmen.asp

The thing is, you don't accuse someone of price gouging - that is uncalled for especially given the nature of the product. If everyone could get a Randall every day, it would be one thing. Waiting 3 years is another.

If you weren't interested in buying, or were just trying to correct a typo, you should have contacted him via email instead of trying to submarine his sale. Price gouging is a serious matter. Personally, I feel that if he wasn't trying to defraud anyone, he wasn't trying to sell the wrong knife, and he wasn't trying to sell defective goods, no one should interject anything negative that might cost his sale. He can sell the knife for whatever he wants, the final price will be whatever the market can bear.

Ok...here some one is worried about over pricing of RMKs!!!

Cum on U for real???

I looked for one of my 25-5 recipts for Aug/10/2001
I payed WILLINGLY $342.80USD (from a dealer) which = $534.77CDN

U think I got ripped??? I dont think so! I got the mods I wanted and only had to wait 4 months!

Pettit...I dont see $385.00USD as being too much to knock of even a 4 month wait...never mind the 3 YEARS it takes to get a RKM!!!

Right to think that the price is too high....I also respect your right to either pay for or reject the price....but I see no reason to flame" the guy who has the knife for sale....I just paid $385.00 for a brand new Model 18 with all the "whistles" but would have paid more if need be....I wanted one and didn't want to wait 40 months....

And if you'll look at e-bay regularly, you'll see Randall knives that go for hundreds over "book" just because they're pretty, unique or at the moment...HOT!:D

Remember, you don't have to pay the asking price.....Frankly, I think you

.44..
Use the same ettiquette you would at a knife show (If you attend them).
The sellers asking price is only your concern if you are buying the knife. In the meantime, stay the hell out of thier posts. I see that you are a basic member along for a "free" ride. Pay the member fee and then you would appreciate the right to sell at your price.

.44 - It was out of line to post is somebodies thread 'killing' a possible sale for them - it aint your money Ralph. ....I was the lucky one to get this knife. I knew it was over the normal asking price from the manufacturer, so I will explain WHY I paid more so you can try and understand, why sometimes paying a bit more does not really hurt....

1. the very long wait for one (I am an impatient bastid!) = get it.

2. I have communicated with the 'seller' many times and we have participated in each others threads on virtually a weekly basis for ages. He is a great person and why not pay a little extra? I am sure I would further our friendship and he would possibly return the favour someday. = get it.

3. If I were to buy this knife in Australia, I would pay easily twice as much for it, so I use the forums to make my purchases. = get it.

4. Can you blame me!? That thing is freaking beautiful!!! = get it.

Its only money!

You see, I actually got the knife cheaper than if I purchased direct from Randall or similar. Who the hell would wait 3 years for a knife and have the chance to have it NOW for another $80 odd bucks?

Not me. What, oh, the postie van just turned up - WWWOOOHHOOOOOO !:D

Buyers are the determining factor as to whether price is too high. Free enterprise is based on the belief that if the price is too high, it won't sell. Too low, and it will outstrip production. I care not what someone asks for their possessions, only what I have to pay.

My .02

Having been spoiled by buying Randall knives from the late Nate Posner of the (now defunct) S.F. Gun Exchange, and never waiting more than 30 days for delivery, I have a hard time waiting 36 months or more for a particular model.

I believe that if an individual (like me) wants one NOW, he or she has to be prepared to pay a premimum. It's up to the individual whether the requested premimum is appropriate, not someone on the outside looking in.

In reference to Ebay:

Lots of Randalls and other quality knives get listed. Not all get sold. Again, the market and individual buyer desire set the market price. If some thief puts up a new ORLANDO FL. marked 14 as being a Vietnam Green Beret used knife with a buy-it-now price of $2000.00, no one is required to take the bait, and we are not required to warn potential buyers either. (Personally, I would consider contacting Ebay admin. if I ever ran across something as egregious as that)
