I am looking into purchasing a Randall model 16 diver's knife. And I would like to know:

i) How effective are Randall saw teeth? Are Worth getting on a knife?
ii) How much maintenance will they need? Can they be sharpened easily?
iii) Any comments on the performance of the waxed leather sheath under water?

Thanks.

IIRC, the Randall saw teeth were designed to rip through the sheet metal in a helicopter fusealage rather than saw in the traditional sense. In general, I think saw teeth are a bad idea. Just look at the difference between a saw blade and a knife blade---if it functions well as a knife, it will probably be a poor saw and vice versa. If you really think you are going to need a saw, buy one of the folding types they make for hunters with replaceable blades. Treat it with Marine Tough Cloth before diving and disaseemble it and rinse well after. If you are looking for something small or as a back up, get a Victorinox Pioneer and treat with the Tough Cloth. You won't be able to disassemble it but if you rinse thoroughly and blast it with WD-40 and retreat when dry you will probably be O.K. I haven't used my 16 sheath underwater but if you do, make sure you periodically rewax with Snoseal, beeswax or pure mink oil. Don't get mink oil with silicon--it will soften the leather which you don't want to do.
