I once heard that the Randall Sheaths that have brown stitching (versus the usual white stitching) is worth more money as it is supposedly a rareity.

Can anyone tell me if this is true?

thanks

matt

Randall Knife sheaths are currently made by Greg Gulcher of Sullivan Leather. They made sheaths for a short time with brown stitching. Since there was a short time frame that this was done the knives may might should bring a premium in the future. Personally If two knives side by side one with brown thread one with white same vintage and price I would pick the brown, If I were in for the long haul and putting these fairly current models away for 20 years I would search out the brown thread models but to pay a premium today for one I don't think I would. High end collectors will certainly look for short production runs and oddities for speculation purposes. Depends on what your plans are YMMV.

thanks for the reply.

Does anyone know when, and how long that these sheaths with the brown stitching were made?

thanks

Matt

Ken B, actually his name is Greg "Gutcher" and a nicer guy you will rarely meet! His is the sheath maker for Randall, is a Randall dealer himself (I've bought about ten Randalls from him), and makes lots of other leather items like holsters. When he first started making sheaths for Randall about ten or twelve years ago, he used white linen thread for the stitching. About a year ago he switched to brown thread (nylon or rayon, I think) in an effort to constantly improve the product. Any white thread sheaths made recently are custom made by him as a special order. Older brown stitched sheaths are from one of the earlier sheath makers to Randall and are probably collectable. The best guy to get the whole story from is Rhett Stidham of the Randall Knife Society at randallknifesociety.com.

Thanks Bruce for the correction. I missed a letter there. The knife that is currently being touted as the rare brown stitch is Sulliven made. Greg Made the announcement to the RKS That as of Jan. 1999 linen thread would no longer be offered the new sewing machines would break this thread. The new tread would be synthetic in black, white, and several shades of brown. Since then the brown has been discontinued and thus the speculation that this is the next hot collectible Randall.
Regards
Ken
