Has anyone ever heard of this knife?

Sorry, just did a deeper search and found the answers to my questions.

For those of you that would like to know about the Tri-Athlete, here is my first encounter with one in 1989.

In February, 1989 when I visited the Randall Shop a new and different knife was for sale in the showcase. "What's that?" I asked Pete. "That's our new 'TRI -ATHLETE'. I only have a few for sale," replied Pete. Well, being the curious animal that I am, I wanted to know how much they cost, how many were made, what's a "TRI-ATHLETE" knife, and will this knife be a regular Randall offering, not necessarily in that order. Although those of you that know me know that I asked how much first. The answer to that was $120.00. Wow! That was a bargain, so I bought two. Well, Pete went on to fill me in on my other questions: "There were approximately 50 made. A 'TRI-ATHLETE' knife got it's name from the fact that a group of 10 or 11 runners were going to make a run in Canada or Alaska and wanted something light to carry for protection, but if you want any more details than that you'll have to ask Gary. I don't know if this knife will be a regular issue or not. It's too soon to tell."

Gary informed me that a doctor in Florida came to him last year with a request for a skeletal knife since he was going to be making an ultra-marathon run of 51 miles outside of Anchorage, Alaska and needed a light knife for protection. Well Gary showed him what they had in their design files and after deciding what he wanted, he was told he would be notified when they were ready. A couple knives were made and the fellow was notified. He did not reply. So Gary called a friend who is a tri-athlete and sent him a knife on approval and he loved it for its practicality and lightness (less than 2 ounces). Gary and his daughter both use one of these when bike riding. A total of about 20 knives were made on the first run. The first 20 had a sheath similar to the original Model 24 "GUARDIAN" sheaths that just covered the blade of the knife and attached to the arm or leg with a strap. The last 30 or so had a snap sheath like the one in the photo. This skeletal knife has a blade approximately 2¾" long, 3/16" thick at heaviest part of the knife and a tapered tang. The overall length is 6½" and 1 & 1/16" wide at the widest point. The original 40 knives were made out of AEB-L stainless, but AEB-L is no longer available and the next run will be out of 440-B stainless. This is the first skeletal knife ever offered by the Randall shop and will probably be offered in the next catalog. ////Rhett Stidham

The preceding was from RKSA newsletter #2, in 1989. Today we know the Tri-Athlete is available from Randall as a non-catalog item. The price , I think is $165.00.

I have recently purchased one from the RAndall Shop and the price was $170.00 plus $7.00 shipping. Greg Gutcher with Sullivans has a neat rig for using this Triathlete as a "neck knife"....and it is available for $45.00 plus shipping. :)
