Does anyone still buy a Randall to use? I like the fit and feel of many of their designs but dealers at the knife show seem to look sideways at you when you suggest actually sharpening one.

I have owned three. Two are sharpened and heavily used. I begining to think I commiting a sin to sharpen the third.

Hi basalt,
Who gives a damn what other people think. I've been using my Randalls for over 20 years. I just bought a mod. 14 2 years ago and I've been using that one also.

I wish I could be macho and say I used my old Randall mod 1 to sneak behind the lines and take out the enemy... but it was only used to carve walking sticks, slice cheese in a hotel room, or perform a wide variety of chores that come up while camping. I just like using it and having it close by when I'm in a strange place.

I use mine as well...It has a nice patina now . I still haven't found a knife that can slice as good as the model 11.Randall makes a great USING knife..

Whittling with my model 7 in the garden yesterday. I bought this one aa a 'user' from a friend, he had used it but you really could not tell. Having got it I then failed to use it,I had 'collected' it , I started to look for another knife to do what I had bought this one to do. I realised what I was doing so out came the Randall and it is being used .
So now as well as having the enjoyment of owning a Randall, I doubled up and now also enjoy using a Randall too. A real win/win situation.
Paul.

I don't have one yet, but a 8" Model #5 is pretty high on the priority list. Nickel silver guard with maroon micarta handle sure would make a pretty knife. A pretty knife knife just waiting for some character to be added. 8" of blade to ensure it will be suitable for chopping. When the kids are old enough to go camping in the mountains, the Randall will be there. Years down the road, it will serve as a reminder of those times. That IMHO, are what Randalls are for. If you think the knife will lose value because we used it, think again. It could just become the most valuable knife I own

Sure do---I currently use three of them out of my collection. Don't be afraid to use them as long as you don't abuse them the value will still remain. As far as I'm concerned they are no more valuable than the Chris Reeve line of knives, and look at how many people use them. You only live once so go ahead and use them for the reason it was made!

Well, I for one will gladly use a Randall !! In fact I have a 6" civilian version of their model #1 which I bought new about 12 yrs ago... promptly sharpened the false edge, blued the blade and bin a-usin' it ever since. But then, I am a definate user kind of guy, and buy knives to cut with.
Question is, why do YOU buy a knife? A collector has different though equally valid reasons, and using knives likely does decrease their value.
Whichever the reason, a Randall is a fine knife...

I've owned Randalls for the better part of 20 years, and they are indeed fine using knives. We have 2 in our kitchen that are used regularly, a 8" Model 4, and a 5" Model 10. I carry and use several different Model 8 Trout & Bird models from my collection when on The Rogue River fishing, or just hanging out by the river with my sons. Treat them well with no abuse, address their edges with care after every use and outing, and they will serve you very well for decades to come.

I have a 6" Hunters Bowie that I bought 40 years ago this fall and you can bet that I have used that baby! I have used it for everything that you can imagine it could be used for in a civilian world. I bought a No. 1 with a 7" blade in 1978, but it has not been used as it is a fighting knife and I am not a knife fighter. I just wanted one. The Hunters Bowie is my using Randall and it is on its second sheath.
