I am looking into R.A.T.'s wilderness and/or jungle training classes. Have any of you been part of these classes? I would really like to get your feedback. Did it meet or exceed your expectations? I'm very interested in hearing what you have to say.

I do not get to the wilderness very often, and would like to learn some of the basic skills I hear you guys talk about. I live on the beach in west central Florida, not real close to anything i would consider wilderness. Besides, trying to build shelter and fire on top of sand dunes is boring and fround upon. :D Thanks all.

I have not personally taken one but I have never heard anything but shining reviews of the training the Mike and Jeff put on. No BS just practical application of practical skills. I’d have no reservations about training with R.A.T.

E.W., what don't you contact Jeff & Mike and offer a trade with them . . . They take you to the jungles for a week of survival & wilderness training (at no charge ;) ), then you take them to the beach for a week & show them the difficulties of trying to build & survive in a "sand shelter" . . . They might just go for it. Let us know how this works out.
Be safe.

you might also consider the training classes in Alabama the training there is pretty comprehensive from all that i've read. its much closer for you as well if thats a concern.

Most of the survival courses teach many of the same techniques and alot of it you can read out of books. You really never learn any of it until an experienced person actually spends the time to help you learn.

Obviously Randall's is easily accessible to answer questions so I would recommend them. There are some instructors who will only help you if you take their course and then they are done with you afterward. Customer service always comes first, availability second, price is last.

I had the good fortune to take the Pilot's Survival course in Peru a couple of years ago, there is a thread on it here and another on the knives here.

The best part of the course though was just getting to know Jeff, Aguilar, and the rest of Jeff and Mike's crew :) The course was definitely worth it, I would certainly recommend it to anyone! I am hoping to get out to one of the Woodsland courses if I ever have some spare time.

What is up with the one guy in back packing the log while there are a bunch of guys in the front with empty hands? It doesn't look very efficient.

"It rolls down stairs and travels in pairs, it rolls over your neighbour's dog,
it fits on your back, it's great for a snack, it's log, log, log.
It's log, it's log, it's big, it's heavy, it's wood,
It's log, it's log, it's better than bad, it's good.":D

I assume they cut it so they are going to use it rather than let it rot. I was just thinking someone should be helping the guy in back whether he needs it or not.

I guess I have a different mindset. "All we need is a small fire....you go ahead". Teamwork doesn't necessarily mean help when required.

Here is the LOG shortly after the first photo was taken being turned into a one man raft, and notice the teamwork, believe me there was plenty of teamwork.

(my final comment on the log... believe me that it would have been more awkward with two people carrying it, and others did carry it)

Thank you for all the comments. I kinda like this one. I love the beach and the woods, had to choose were to live and were to visit. Both have great scenery, but I never saw groups of 20 somethings in skimpy bikinis in the woods. That made the decision alot easier.:D

I took the woodland ops course this past April in Alabama. I enjoyed it and would consider going again just for fun, I thought it was definitely worth it.
