Decided to cook outside tonight, at least some by open fire. Started off in the kitchen with the usual culprits...and my new Magnum Camp Knife (courtesy of the Northeast Beckerheads and Ka-Bar):

I haven't sharpened it since I got it, and I put it to my kitchen steel and realized that it was gonna take way more than that to put an edge on that thang that it deserves. Out to the garage:

I just built that stand for my grinder so I could put it to use more easily...designed it to fold up (remove the grinder top and shelf) when not in use. Trying to organize while accumulating more stuff. Hard felt wheel and emery first, then the WorkSharp 6000 belt and back to the grinder with cr1 on the wheel:

Getting there!

Gotta be sharp if yer gunna work in my kitchen! Made a short order cutting up coupla peppers and onions. mmm....sliiceey.

bagged and tagged...chili, onion and garlic powz, margarine, salt. shoulda scanned it before I wrapped it ...

Got the fire ready to go with my 9 and the trusty Fiskars X7 Biggest problem I have is I am hopeless using a firesteel. Big time suck at it. Luckily, my survival in my backyard was assured by the Earl of Bic. (I have great tinder, lights in a second with the Bic, no go with the steel.) Still, a great fire, and a perfect fire evening: cold enough to enjoy the heat, not so cold as to freeze your backside off while warming up the frontside.

The last of corn for the season and the peppahznunyuns on the grill, Applegate Farms beef dogs (so good..) on the fire.....

and, oh yes, because this is what holds the fabric of my universe together and urges me forward through life, the holy spirit, let there be....er:

see? aptly monikered.

I don't know about anyone else, but I have a very hard time doing anything without one or two major detours. I mean, a grinder and a WorkSharp just to cut some peppers and onions? I've got several very sharp knives in my kitchen already. I don't know why I do half the stuff I do. Just compelled to do stuff. Make things. So that was my time vertical this afternoon/evening. Thanks for checking it out. You'll never get those minutes back, y'know. Not any of them.

Cool thread!
I really like your fire pit. And that BK5 takes a nasty sharp edge! Looks good!
Thanks for sharing.

Nice, that 5 looks nice and sharp and is a great kitchen knife! Thanks for the great photos.

Knives, food, fire, and beer,

I would say that is about the perfect way to spend an evening,

I can relate. I'm hopeless at using a firesteel as well. Made it work only a couple of times during a contest being held here. Like that bench grinder setup you got going on there...

Oh, I get plenty of sparks with the steel. They just seem to roll off my tinder, tho. Gonna order myself some Gobspark steels today, I think. Cause...ya know...it must be I need better tools...;)

I've got a SketchUp drawing of that stand if your interested. Still working on a way to keep the top attached firmly while still being easy to remove....using a clamp right now after the top almost worked itself of the stand last night:eek: It's 4 2x4's, a 48" piano hinge, scrap plywood, sink cutout and some screws. As for the grinder, that felt wheel is the bees knees. Got to be careful when working the long blades, handle to the left, tho, lest you catch your hand in the other wheel

If you don't already have it. Get yourself some Hemp/Manila twine. Takes sparks like nobody's business.

Cut about a 1" piece, seperate the three strands, pull them apart into individual fibers, role the whole mess around in your hands to form a cord like substance, pull it apart again and fluff it a bit. Should start on one strike maybe two. If I'm getting sparks it usually goes the first time.

Also, hold the striker still and pull the steel,

Twine on right side about halfway up the picture, next to/underneath the birchbark,

I carry a small coil of twine in every kit I have.

Thanks, LV. That method looks pretty good. I've had good luck with dryer lint and some other non-woods tinder, but I'm trying to get consistent with what I might find outside, if I had to make a fire with just the steel and the knife. I'm working on my Ray Mears Merit Badge. Some of it is that it is very difficult using the knife and the steel in the fire bowl. I've had better luck with using it on the ground.

This is a nice thread. My 5 still has its factory edge on it. The damn thing was wicked sharp when I got it and has cut everything, including the wife's thumb and index finger. It's still so sharp it doesn't need me dulling it up with my shite sharpening technique.

I have such a crush on my BK-5. A BK-9 has been on my list for a long time now, too.
