hi guys.
i have seen a couple listings for them on the Exchange/Gadgets and Gear for Sale(Individuals).

i am considering selling my deer rifle. anyone ever done it? i am guessing i will need to ship from/to FFL.

Would appreciate any comments/advice you might have.

thanks.

If it's a face to face sale, follow your state's laws -- in Kansas i can sell a rifle or shotgun to a resident of my state or any directly adjacent state with no need to go through an FFL.
The one time I sold a rifle to a guy in Ga, his FFL faxed me a copy of their license, then after I received the funds, I shipped the rifle to the FFL by UPS with signature confirmation (I'm pretty sure it has to be by overnight express), the buyer went to his FFL, filled out all the proper paperwork, and took his rifle home.
Had he declined the transfer before filling out paperwork, my understanding is that the FFL would have packaged it back up, shipped it to my local FFL, and I would have had to fill out paperwork to get it back before issuing a refund. (because the FFL on his end had to log the rifle in, it would have been an interstate transfer for me to get it back, hence the new "yellow sheet" on my end)
Before making the sale, make sure there is agreement by all parties on how return shipping and FFL fees will be handled. (i.e. return shipping is on him, will be split evenly, is all on you. transfer fees are on him, on you, etc...)

good luck!

good advice vik. there are some local guns shops that will buy used guns. i will check in with them, but i imagine they have to offer me little enough to make a profit. i could consign it too, i suppose. but, i figured i would add a post on BF, as well.

i will check with my local gun shop (who i would be using as an FFL) and get some advice from them. they are usually willing to help.

thanks vik.

yup - local gun shop can only afford to give you $.35-.50 on the dollar for blue book value, unless they know someone looking for that specific piece.
they might be willing to take it on consignment, too.

I was not saying only sell through a gun shop -- I was saying if it's anything but a face to face sale, it needs to be shipped to an FFL holder who will log the rifle in, then go through all the necessary steps & paperwork to transfer ownership to the buyer. There will likely be a fee to the buyer of $10-35 to cover the shop owner for his time and hassle.
By the same token, if you want an extra layer of "safe" to the sale (which will cut into your profit a bit, so price accordingly) go to your local shop and see what they would charge to log the rifle in on their books and ship it to the other guy's FFL holder for you -- this makes sure there is no way someone could try to say you made an improper sale.

I've sold guns on the forum. My FFL dealer had to receive the license from the buyer's FFL dealer and them my FFL dealer sent the gun to the buyers FFL dealer.

If you don't have any luck here, try Gunbroker.com. They also have tutorials for buying and selling for first timers. I've bought and sold guns there without any problems.
