I was planning on buying a Ranger RD-4 and emailed Justin yesterday, he replied back immediately

(Thank you for your interest. Right now the RD series are back ordered for about 8 weeks. The merger of Ontario Knife company and Ranger Knives has put production a little behind. We are ramping things up and should have the blades avaialable again soon. Thigs are going to be a little different so I think you will have to pick the blade up from a dealer (Brigade Quarermaster is in your area) and if you want any mods done to it you can always send it to me. Thank you again and if there is anything that I can do just let me know.

and told me that there is a backlog for 8 weeks due to merger of Ontario and Ranger knife company. Guys, do you think it will affect the excellent quality of Ranger knives. Is it true that RAT cutlery separated from Ontario because of quality issues? What do you think will happen to Ranger knives quality?

Ontario has agreed to build the knives to Justin's specs. Same steel, same construction, same everything...just under a different name.

I spoke to Justin on the phone some time ago when I needed a good all-purpose knife for an upcoming backpacking/hunting trip.

I just finished reading up on some of the Ontario/RAT Cutlery thread so I'm not really up to speed on exactly what transpired there. I do know Ontario threatened and filed a lawsuit to stop RAT Cutlery from using the RAT name, but I'm not sure how that finished up or if it's done yet.

The Ontario/RAT problems are primarily business problems. Ontario can and does produce quality work. There is some question over whether current Ontario RAT work is properly authorized and done as well as it had been.

The deal with Justin, however, is an ongoing operation, not an adversarial relationship. At this point, I wouldn't worry about quality.

Justin's putting his name on it...and that's something he doesn't do lightly. He's among the real stand-up guys in the industry.

Don't worry about it.

I've seen pictures of the new OKC RD4 in plain edge and serrated over at the other place. I can't tell what the edge looks like, but the knives look pretty good.
