Ranger Comparison

Would any existing Ranger owners mind providing some quick feedback/thoughts and a comparison to other models in the Fiddleback family? I own/have owned multiple custom Dukes and Woodsmen, really enjoy the production Duke, and these models feel the closest in OAL to compare.

(Full disclosure - I am trying my best to stay away from FiddlebackOutpost and the OD Ranger there, my wallet is just glad it didn't have natural liners with pinstripes or else I'd have already bought it :) )

Thanks in advance!

Hey.... Wait a minute.... Whats that supposed to mean?

FYI - when I came into the office this morning, I heard a noise in to storage room. It was coming from our two-tone Osprey K/T Ranger. It was saying, "buy me dsarps. Buy me."

I thought that it was odd, but now it makes sense.

Ha, I love sandblasted OD micartas & G10, so that sweet Ranger you all have is what started this in the first place :)

Here is the Rangers compared to a couple of Big Sneaky knives, the Bishop, Bushcraft Sr. in Big Oak (sold), and a Camp Muk in Fiesta Burlap.

I don't have a Woodsman yet from Andy and our Duke Field knives sold and we're waiting to restock from the shop.

I've been avoiding that OD Ranger as well. Luckily, or unluckily, I just don't have the funds for it right now. :D

I really like both of the knives, but I will say that, in holding them and feeling their grip and balance, the OD is my favorite. It's looks are understated, but it's feel speaks volumes. Whenever you're ready for a Ranger, you just can't go wrong with one like that.

Stop! Tell me how ugly and terrible it feels!

Actually I wouldn't believe you... :D

I do that all of the time - when I want to keep the knife personally and not sell it :)

Which reminds me: this knife is completely and utter crap. I think that the blade steel is Chinese pot metal and the scales are silly putty. Worst knife ever. Definitely, definitely do not, under any circumstance, purchase this knife.. :)

Sadly, the OD Green Commando Ranger left us last night for a new hope with a new happy customer in Ohio. Ranger, you will be missed... :(

dsarps, would that Ohio customer be you? :D

I was trying real hard to stay away from looking at that Ranger for the past week. I'm glad it got a home because I was about to dip into my savings to give it one! Awesome knife for sure. I'll be getting myself a Ranger at some point...

Has to be total coincidence that another fine Ohioan picked it up :)

..... yeah, that was me, I think both Marc and Phillip used their jedi mind tricks on me and I finally cracked. My original plan was to hold out for one with a similar config with natural liners + pinstripes as I prefer that to a commando setup, but no idea when/if one would come along and the little details on this one just looked too good.

I have a feeling this is going to give my production Duke a run for its money - excited to try my first OKT model here.

I wanted to hold a little ceremony here to morn its loss, while celebrating it as our first Osprey sale, but everyone gave me strange looks so I just dropped it...

I can't really say why I liked this knife as much as I did. I mean, I like commando style knives, like the Fiddleback Forge Arete we have, but it was more than that. Maybe the G10 grips just feeling so solid? Just the way the knife balanced in the hand? Visually I would have thought my preference would have been our other Osprey Ranger, which is still for sale slackers ;) - However, once I held the commando version, it was game over.

Marc,
Friendly suggestion. When you take pictures of your knives for sale on your web site can you please show both sides of the knife. This helps a great deal
Thank you
Hmm - I posted a response to this but it looks like a SQL database issue kept it from being recorded....

Robert is our photo guru and jack of all trades for the website. He generally gets a bunch of photos for each knife from different sides and angles shooting outdoors in parks around Lake Lanier here in Georgia, but I'll pass it along to remind him. The photos above in this thread were just quick & dirty stuff that I did in the office for the original posting.

Let us know how you like it dsarps! Post up some more pictures of it!

I left the lanyard on due to its orange-ness, figured you'd appreciate that :)

The guys from Fiddleback Outpost did a great job (I was impressed with their packaging and overall presentation, much like your unboxing video).

The Ranger profile fills a nice spot between the woodsman and duke, with a little less belly than the duke and more than the woodsman, with a great subtle drop to the point that I could not discern just from online pictures. Also really like the feel of Chris' flat grind with convex secondary bevel, very strop friendly edge maintenance in the future I'd imagine.

I have a younger brother deploying out in a few weeks and this one may join his weapons system, but I am definitely in love with this OD G10 and will be on the lookout for more offerings from Chris in it.
