'Ello,

Early next year I'm going to order a custom from Justin. I know that it will be a small one, in fact it will likely be what some have called the "Big bird". I'm willing to invest up to 80 dollars in this little one.
That being said what sort of goodies (steel type, handle material/color, blade thickness, grind....etc.) should I pack into this bugger?
What sort of materials have you had Justin use in your own customs?
Note: it will be my EDC for everything from round the house to out in the mountains.
Your help is much appreciated......

MY Big Bird??

:)

Anywho...$80?? That might be a little light for a big bird but ok...I would pretty much stick to 5160 steel but with yellow G-10 scales

The Big Bird I might end up getting will have the 2 inch blade and for variety maybe blaze orange g-10?...

If it is going to be so small, I would go for 1095 or A2 (or M2 :)). 5160 is tough as hell, but what is it good for in 2" blade?
Also don't forget about sheath (AFAIK Justin has option where to get kydex sheath (as he did with TFIs) for his blades)

Good luck

huugh,

Here's a wild thought: maybe mirror polished ats-34 with tan micarta? Although the g-10 might preform better for what I plan on doing to it.

Leatherface: that was your Big Bird with the M-4 monster....;)

Pick whatever suits you best

(You probably know that carbon steels are much easier to sharpen than stainless, don't you? (and they are (usually:)) also cheaper than SS)

You bring up an excellent point considering I will likely use the little bugger on a daily basis so carbon steel may be needed. From what I have heard A-2 and M-2 are much harder to sharpen than most SS blades not a problem but which would preform better in you mind?

One last note i would imagine it being well worth it to get a nice kydex rid to go with the little bugger.

Thanks for your help,

Well, compared to SS @ similar hardness and carbon content they are easier to sharpen :)
But of course some are hard to sharpen (like M-2 = high speed tool steel :))

If I was to pick, I would get something not very common (like M-2 (err, think big, something like CPM-10V :D) - as I don't cut tons of stuff every day, so it could stay sharp for ages :)
But if I was about to use it hard every day, I would pick 1095.

(BTW I know it is off the budget but what about carbon fiber handles? It is tough, chemically stable and looks good (it is similar to G10, except utilizing carbon fibers instead of fiberglass) - I remember that Justin did knife with CF handles )

hmmm...IF IT WERE MINE!! :)

I would go with a normal carbon steel...Anything over that will prolly kick it over budget...hmm O-1?? Takes a wicked edge..I use it on my NessMucks and it tears a deer UP

Carbon fiber?? Nah YELLOW g-10!!!!! ;)
