Today I ordered an RD 4 custom while speaking with Justin he asked me if I wanted the old style or new style . I had no idea there was a new style and luckly Justin was patient enough to explain the differences to me. He also told me if I wanted to see an example I could go to the ranger knives forum.

Here is an explanation from Justin on his forum about the changes to the series:

"Well lets see the blade shape went to more of a clip point for better penetration while stabbing and digging. Added grooves to the thumb ramp. Rounded the birds beak pommel added grooves to the rounded pommel and an oval lanyard hole. All in all they aren't major changes but it gives the series a nice new look and feel."

I tried to bring the pictures over here for an example but was unable to do it:o .

He said mine should be ready by christmas or soon after, in the new style :D . I believe all his knives will be in the new style in the near future, and the old style will be avalible as custom orders.

I saw the changes over on the Ranger forum, there are several pics of the new RD6 there. I like the thumb ramp grooves, not crazy about the enlarged lanyard hole, would like to have seen the standard lanyard hole with the new style pommel. The hole on the old style is large enough to pass any lanyard I am likely to employ. I would like to see the choil area enlarged and shaped a little better and the new tip, I like the original better, seems like it would be the stronger of the two. I have the RD6 and I wouldn't trade it for the latest style. A new production RD4, well maybe.

The new "Style" gives them more penetration...

I think Justin is going for a compromise on strength and penetration with that design..

Will it be tough?? yup

Will it be worth the $$$?? yup

I cant wait to see the new RD9!!!

But they need serrations!!

I very much like the new look for the RD series!! That is schaweeeeeeet!! I also like that Justin is going to be making an RD 4 a regular production piece. I do have my custom RD 4 though.I also have an RD 6, which I love as well.

OOOOOOOOH... Ok... TKC... NOW I get it... I can't even comprehend how dumb i can be... lol...
Seriously, i can't wait for the new RD4...

I was thinking the same thing -- It seems that the keener point and increased penetration would be perfect for a smaller knife, but on say, an RD9, don't you want more mass behind the tip not only for strength, but for weight? makes sense to me, but what do i know. Oh, and i will miss the little point on the pommel -- never know when you will need to give something(or someone) a whack...

It's funny, but one of the reasons I got the RD6 was because I prefer a stout tip on a knife this size. Guess I will have jump fast if I want another before the keener point stock hits the masses. I think Justin calls the old style pommel tip a "birds beak". I like it.

I just received the RD6 and the RD9 from Justin two days ago, they must be the old style, Ireally would not want to change it , this is a big heavy duty knife and I like it stout.

Leatherface,

The RD knives are big tough sturdy knives they are not made to be pretty they are made to work hard I am very happy with the two that I just received only thing that I would change is the sheath, I don't care for the stock sheath I would like to have leather pouch sheaths made.
