ranger knives

knives designed for cutting are not really good for throwing. The steel is too hard, while throwing knives should be softer, for shock absorbing.

I don't think I would throw one, but they are really stout, I have chopped some stuff I should not have and made the whole edge bend like 1/4" up inot the knife, I took a hammer and flat steel and pounded it flat again, not a problem one. No chips or dings either.

Mine (Rd9) is a beast and has lived up to it's rep...I plan on getting several more Ranger's in the future...I wouldnt throw it though, unless I really had to...I have 2 throwing knives that I chunk every now and then

Attach it to a spear?? I MIGHT have done that to see what would happen...I also have drilled 2 lashing holes into a Truflight for this reason...

justin also does custom's and could probably build you a thrower if ya ask him nice...:D

Here is one showing my Rd9 and Wererabbit side/side

what leatherman said...

you might also check out his site, the combat knife was initially designed as a thrower, and i'm sure you could get him to make you something you like as well.

Right, the Ranger Airborne Combat was designed as a thrower - although i use mine for other things too - but to get at the second part of the question, the tips of the RD series are extremely robust, to the point that some people even request them thinned down. I would feel completely comfortable throwing any of my Rangers, especially the RD series (and of course the ARC, as mentioned, which is made of a 3/8 thick slab of one of the world's toughest tool steels). enjoy,

This knife is the nicest and the most useful and little fixed I've seen lately sir. I see a new fixed blade EDC in my future. Leatherface, is this your design or a regular one from the RD series? What kind of steel is it made from? How thick is the blade at the spine? Is it possible to order one without the oversized choil?

Thanks in advance.

It isn't the hardness as much as the type of steel, many of the cutlery steels would actually get more brittle if drawn soft, and it isn't like steels like A8, S7, etc. have problems with toughness if you are throwing them.

The RD9 can be thrown, and should easily be able to take the impact shock given that is what the steel is made for (durability). But it doesn't have the right handle design to allow smooth release and is fairly expensive for a recreational thrower.

Redguy,
The Wererabbit was my idea, but not really my design...I simply told Justin to take a Rd9 and shrink the blade down to the spec I wanted...The blade from the tip of the scales to the tip of the knife is just over 4", giving me a 3.5" cutting area...

It is made from 5160 w/black micarta scales and has had the crap beat'n out of it since I got it with no damage whatsoever

Give Justin a buzz and ask him about the choil...Also you might want to get the swedge sharpened or beveled...I plan on sending mine back and having him bevel it a bit

It also makes a mean peanut butter sandwhich!!! :)

Leatherface,

Thank you! As soon as my "minor" financial problems are over, I will ask Mr. Gingrich about the details. In the meantime I will try to decide if really CPM3V is the best steel for this application.

After custom knife inquiries have been ignored by Busse and Co., I emailed Justin and we discussed a new custom EDC peice I have been trying to get made. Heck of a nice guy. He is moving atm, so I have to wait a while, but not as long as Busse told me in one of the few replies (1-2 yrs). Gives me some time to hide more $20s from the wife either way :)

All the things I have heard about how Justin does business seem to be spot on. Nice guy.

J Curd,
Justin mentioned in his forum that he hoped to be back up and running around the 1st of November...Once ya get it dont forget to post a PIC!!

Welcome to the sickness!

It should be quite a style departure from what Justin typically does...definately a one of a kind. It seems alot of customs catch on as limited run pieces, so I will post pics on his forum so everyone can scope it out.
