I'm thinking of getting a RD-7 or RD-9 , which one would you get & why ?
Have any of you guys had either of these knives? How are they ?
I'm packing a BK-10 now, how do these compare ?

The RD-7 and RD-9 are much larger and heavier than the BK-10.Like comparing a small pick-up to a full size one.

The RD-7 and 9 also able to withstand much more abuse, can chop better, pry better,etc--but I would not like to skin a deer with one(not that the Bk-10 would work well either--but it would be better)

If it was a choice between the RD-7 (or) the RD-9--and you were going to bring the BK-10 along(or other smaller blade)--then get the RD-9(much better chopper than the RD-7)

If you could only have the RD-7 or RD-9--and no other knife--get the RD-7(smaller.lighter,easier to control).

and Justin is FANTASTIC when it comes to customer service. He can build you a RD to suit your needs!!!!!

Sincerely

Dr.BIll

The RD-7 is a good chopper and with the choil it can be choked up on for smaller tasks. I've found mine to be a nice balance between a large chopper and small knife.

I'm also thinking of getting an RD9.

Should I buy it directly from Justin over the phone, or from one of his dealers?
I see Brigade Quartermasters has them in stock.

Thanks,

I have an RD7 that I've had time to use for a lot of stuff. It's one ridiculously tough blade. If you can manage to break it somehow, then it would be interesting to hear how it happened! :D Although it's a big and heavy knife, it does decently well in the normal cutting tasks. Not bad for a knife of this size. It also chops well. The RD9 is, I think, a bit too large for small knife stuff, although it can manage in a pinch, but it chops great. For a chopper, the RD9 is the best choice. For a general use field knife, I'd go with the RD7.

Thanks,

I would buy from Justin directly, especially if you feel like getting a few modifications made on the blade - like different blade finishes, or scales. Justin will be away from the shop a couple of days for Thanksgiving now, though.

Those look like well built knives.

The more precisely you can describe the intended use the better we can advise you.

I own both and believe the RD 7 is just right, and isn't too long to give the extra versatility of choking up on it using the choil allowing you to do finer work as another poster has stated. The RD 9 while a bit better of a chopper is a tad long for the above mentioned scenario. If you want mainly a chopper go with the RD9, If you want an all around camping / field knife capable of a wider variety of chores, I would go with the RD7.

If you're looking for a knife as a tool, Ranger knives are an excellent value.

Do they look pretty enough to spend time photographing? Not really. Will you be perceived as being part of an elite group owning them? Not really. Is there a cult following that will give you a sense of belonging and add meaning to your life? Not really.

Ranger knives are performers. No hype, very reasonable pricing, no over inflated secondary market price gouging, they're available, and they even include a sheath.

Exactly, why I love mine! A damn great knife at a great price!

(RD7)Welcome to the club! and Justin is a god! :D

I only have a RD-7, so I can't offer the contrasting opinion, but I can say I got the RD-7 because I wanted a more rounded knife, the RD-9 seems like it would be a little to big for me, more of a chopper. But, I'm only 5-9 so that might have something to do with it.
Heres mine :D

Here's my custom RD-7. Its a few months old and has proven to be a great all-around camp knife.

I second brianNH.

Be aware that the RD-7 has 7" of cutting edge on an 8" x 1/4" blade.

The RD-9 similarly has a 10" blade.

On mine, as I indicated, the RD-7 has 7" of sharp and the RD-9 has 9" of sharp. The choil on each is 1". YMMV.
