Will quality likely go down some when the line-up is taken over by a large corporation?
I am interested in the Ranger knives. Should I hurry up and buy before Ontario takes over?
Blade failure is different than fit-and-finish. I'd rather own a knife that never needs its warranty
I was recently looking at a friend's new Ontario TAK-1. The grind on the blade was very uneven!
I was referring to the final edge shape of the knife, opposite the knife spine. Viewing the edge from the handle towards the tip, some portions looked deeper than others. The edge on one side was ground much furth than on the other side, and then it would switch to being ground shallower on that side a little further down. The tip of the knife almost looked slightly bent, but this was on a brand new knife.What exactly is "grind" ?
No. Justin said his original warranty is still there, we trust him![]()

I'm not sure if you've seen any of Justin's "production" Rangers, but their grinds aren't always exactly even, either.Fit and finish is likely to go up with the Ontario deal. Justin said the warranty will be the same and quality in general will go up, and I'm inclined to trust him. He's a very good guy. :thumbup:
Justin will still do customs, though. :thumbup: And those will be better quality and fit and finish than the production Ontario Rangers, or the old "production" Rangers made by Justin himself.
A post I read by Justin said that the Ontario knives warranty will be handled by Ontario. Only pre-Ontario knives and customs he does in the future will be handled by his warranty.
Justin's personal warranty is top notch. He will go out of his way to satisfy a customer.
Ontario's warranty is hit or miss. Some people have had good luck while others have not. Before the legal battle, RAT was doing a lot of warranty work on Ontario RAT knives, simply because Ontario refused to.
THe production stuff will be as good or better than the current quality. I will continue to design and produce customs so no wories there. The warranty stays intact. The only difference will be if you got you blade from me you send it to me if you get it from Ontario you will send it to them.
not to stir up anything but will the prices go up as well?
That quote says to me: I will honor the warranty of the knives I sell and Ontario will honor the warranty of the knives they sell.this is a quote from the Ranger forum by Justin;
To me that says no matter what problems (if any) come up, Justin will make sure it's taken care of.
The slight bend could have been a quenching problem. I studied the knife for a while, specifically the tip, and I couldn't be certain. I am not sure, but I think that the greatly skewed grind of the edge right at the tip was giving the false impressin that the tip itself was slightly bent. The spine may have been perfectly straight. It was weird and I didn't like it.Thanks for the clarification. Do you think the slight bend at the tip of the knife might be due to quenching ? I read about something similar in another thread once. I have a knife with a bend at the tip and the grind there is funny looking, rather like a roller coaster twist. It's in a spot where it doesn't matter much, but I suppose it needs to be cleaned up with some grinding or diamond stones. It was new too.
