Hello,

Can anyone provide me with some information regarding the quality of the Ranger RAK knife? Are these knives in the range of quality as the RAT Cutlery RC versions or are they more similar in quality to the Ontario RAT and RD OKC knives?

I'm interested in this style of knife but I haven't seen much interest about them on Bladeforums.

Thanks.

if im not mistaken they were mad by ontario and in the last 18 mos rat has dis associated with ontario to go on their own and since the fit and finish appear to be better I own an rtak 2 and love it though my next purchase is going to be a rc 5 check out rats web page great stuff id wait and buy it from rat it is the equivalent of an rc4

Good question. I've never owned an Ontario Ranger Knife, but have/had quite a few Ranger Knives made by Justin (Both his regular models, customized, & full customs).

The RAK is a neat design, IMHO. I think it's more user specific as it's not necessarily a good "all-around" knife. I also prefer the ones with G-10/micarta scales vs the cord wrapped versions.

I believe Ontario uses the same steel as Justin used in his respective models. The RD series is in 5160 steel & the RAK is in 1095 steel.

Hope that helps.

Ontario uses the same steal and HT Justin used.

Yes Ontario and RAT had problems, and it did jurt Ontario. They probably learned from their mistakes.

If it has the Ranger logo, even Ontario Ranger, I trust it.

Good to know. The Ranger RAK has a 6 inch blade and a window punch type of handle which is something I'm looking for. I would consider RAT Cutlery but I don't think they have a comparative model. It would be nice if they made a longer bladed RC3, something like the RC5 except lighter.

The RAK is a good blade

I have worked with both from Ranger and from Ontario

Both are well made and dependable

hmm I have tortured my Rd's ALOT more than the simple workout of the RAK

but

I would give the edge for tuffness to the 5160 but give the 1095 a little more edge retention

PERSONALLY

you wont be able to tell the difference if the knives are done correctly at HT

There are some instances of quality control problems before Rat started working with rowen. I dont own an ontario ranger yet, own many original Rangers. Of the people I know that have ontario Rangers, I have not seen any problems yet. I think they tightened up their quality control and Justin made sure that they used the same steel and heat treat that he uses. If you like it, I say get it.
