Ranger RD-4 or RAT Cutlery RC-5?

I'm interested in getting one of the aformentioned blades, and would like a few questions answered first, so as to make an informed decision. They are both a quarter inch thick, but the Ranger RD-4 is made of 5160 carbon steel, and the RAT RC-5 is made of 1095 carbon steel.

First off, am I right in saying that 5160 is generally tougher than 1095 but has less edge retention?

I want as tough a knife as possible (no, I can't afford a Busse:D), but I like the ergonomics and looks of the RC-5 better than the RD-4.

My question is this: Is 5160 that much tougher than 1095 that it is worth sacrificing the looks, edge retention, and ergonomics of the RC-5 to get a tougher blade? In short, just how much tougher IS 5160 than 1095?

Thanks in advance

I was just looking for the demonstration video of an early RC-3's heat treat, also 1095 (couldn't find it). It bent an impressive amount and sprang back to arrow straight. I'm assuming the SERE will be heat treated similarly. Jeff Randall (or was it Mike?) said they tolerated slightly less edge retention on the RCs in order to increase durability of the blade as a whole.

I have an RD-6. I don't rekon the SERE would fare too badly against it, but I'd like to see it bent, myself. :D

Also, it will be tough to find a RD4 from Ranger Knives, since Justin does not have anymore to ship out, so buying from an individual is in hand. Not sure when the RC-5 SERE will be shipped out, maybe this month?

Well, 5160 is generally a little tougher than 1095, and 1095 should have slightly better edge holding, assuming good heat treat on both. That being said, I own 5160 and 1095 knives from Ranger Knives, I really cant notice any difference in toughness or edgeholding between the two. Heat treat is the most important thing here between the two steels, and Rat Cutlery and Justin have it down. I also think it is safe to say that Ontario has more quality control issues than Justin or Rat Cutlery, and that is the only way you are going to get a RD4 now, unless you pay more for one off the exchange.
