Would like some clarification about these knives. The standard RD-6 is 1/4 inch 5160 steel and the Bush series is 3/16 inch, but is the Bush series 5160 or 1095 steel. I know the topic of steel has come up before, but the posts that I have found have conflicting information. Also, which of these two knives would you recommend and why. Thank you for your time.

5160.

You have to say what your use is before people can tell you which is better.

I would be using it for bushcraft, firemaking, batoning, simple shelter construction, simple tool making like spears. One of my kids is getting into the outdoors and makes is own shelters(no knife use he is only 8), of course he loves to make fires and thinks spears are cool. So looking for a knife for myself to teach him some more skills.

I think you would like the RD6. Why not get your son a SAK or Opinel. Never to young to learn. ( With dads help)

If you are going to do much beating on this knife then I would go with the thicker steel RD-6. Both are flat ground and will do a good job of slicing. I have the RD-4 and really like it.:)

I've got the RD-6 BUSH and even at 3/16, I wouldn't be afraid to beat the crap out of it by using it for bushcraft. It's a sturdy knife.

Thanks for the input. Ordered the Bush Series, not going to destroy cars only cut some wood so went with the lighter of the 2. Also ordered a Opinel #6 for my son, had never heard of them before but have found nothing but praise for them here and on knifeforum.com, will get some more Opinels if the one turns out to be as good as everyone says.

I think you made a good decision. You and your son will have fun. My kids had knives at that age. I would carry them and let them use them when I could by close by.
