I want to get an RD 7. Some blades have a satin finish, others an epoxy-polyester coating. It will be used for general camping chores. Cost is similar for both types. Which would be best?

myself, I like satin, but with non stainless steels, coatings help to prevent the spread of rust. If you keep your equipment clean you should be ok. Also 5160 does resist rust fairly well compared to other non-chrome carbon steels.

In the end it is a matter of preference. That is why so many people prefer stainless steels and that is really their only advantage over non stainless carbon steels.

If it is going to be used on food at all, I'd say go satin finish, otherwise the black epoxy coat because it is tough stuff and really helps the blade resist rust. The satin RDs look really great though and I plan I getting one with Justin's new flat grind to play with his brother 7.

What grind do the current blades have? Also, would flat be better as an all around camp knife?
