Ranger RD4 or RAT RC4 ?

I'm wanting a nice 4" edc. I'm torn between a Ranger RD4 modified somewhat by Justin (5160 steel) or a RAT cutlery RC4 (1095). Which do you prefer and why?

I love my RD4 (customized with a spear-point), but it is a bit heavy for EDC. I went with the full 1/4", but if you slimmed the blade a bit it would carry much lighter. Just some thoughts.

I love carrying my RD 4 in the woods.

I can’t comment on the RAT brand of knives as I’ve never owned or used one but they do have a very good reputation. I do own and have used all of the RD series from Ranger Knives and they have all exceeded my expectations. These knives are built to be used and used hard and I have done so with mine without any problems whatsoever. The whole RD series in my opinion is a bargain in today’s knife market. The owner of Ranger Knives is a very nice guy and I have always just called him up directly from the number on his website and ordered directly from him.
Hope this helps.

You can order a RD-4 in whatever thickness you desire. My 3/16th RD-4 carries nicely in the woods.

Both are great knives and companies. They also have great warranties. I have really been impressed with the new RAT knives. I think the RC4 would be a little better user. However, you cannot go wrong with either one. The RC4 has a much better sheath system.

RC-4 if you want to cut/slice things.
RD4 if you want to split and pry only. Even at 3/16" thick my RD4 was way too thick to sharpen. I sold it.

I think it depends on what you want exactly, & at what price-point. For the $ & slicing uses, not chopping, you're probably better off with the RC4. However, you can get a RD4 just about any way you want it, it's just going to cost more. So, it depends.

You can't really go wrong with either choice. The Rat will probably be better for slicing as mentioned before but the RD can take a ton of abuse and can handle it no problem. Just get both..;)

Well, it depends, 5160 vs 1095 if you want to slice the RAT, if you want to baton/pry the stock RD would serve better. OR>> You could do what I did, and just rebevel the hell out of the RD and bring its edge geometry down to 12/24 deg. Then it will do it all. But not everyone wants to put the work in to accomplish that, and it is quite a bit of work.
And the RD-4 is not a 4" blade, it's a 5".

Well, I appreciate all the good comments. I'm leaning towards the RC4. I have lots of large heavy knives for chopping. This one would be mostly for slicing and cutting. I guess the final question is the 5160 vs 1095?

You won't be sorry. Besides you can split wood and baton the RC-4 just fine. Don't worry about breaking it. If you do you will be taken care of.

the rat is going to be for suited for "edc" because it is smaller with a slimmer profile.

the rd-4 is going to be a much stronger, tougher knife due to its 5160 as opposed to 1095..
....i think.either way it will be 1/4in thick.no RAT is 1/4in thick.

while RAT will take care of you, technically their warranty cant compare with justins.guarenteed for life with no questions asked.

for edc i'd go with a rat-3 for myself.for the baddest knife that isnt to big on the hip,i'd always go with a ranger

5160 isn't "much tougher" than 1095. It's "somewhat" tougher at best.

The new RC's come with an even better warranty than the Ontarios.

With RAT Cutlery we have a "no questions asked" warranty. You break it or screw it up - we replace it. Our knives will break if you abuse them enough, we make no claims otherwise, but if you abuse it and break it then we'll send you another one.
