The Ranger RD line is an excellent value. You get a super tough, well made knife at a great price. Here it is pretty much as I got it. It came sharp except for the tip, easy fix.

I don't like coatings, so it's gotta go. Jasco spray on epoxy remover will take it right off. (Wear gloves and be careful this stuff is no joke!)

After sitting for a couple minutes the coating is bubbling off. Just need a little scraper to get the rest off. Then used wet/dry sandpaper with WD40 to clean it up.

Here's the initial pic after some sanding. I also sanded the edges and corners of the handle slabs, feels perfect now.

The sheath it came with is acceptable, but the Survival Sheath is MUCH better.

Fits in perfectly, but the liner can be adjusted if I need to.

This knife and sheath combo will see plenty of woods time, and I won't be afraid to brutalize it! I want to get an RD9 next for my chopper. :D

That Jasco stuff is pretty impressive!

Great sheath:D

Great sheath:D

Always great to get a purely objective opinion:D Seriously though, they are great sheaths! I'll have to find somewhere to buy another one:D

TKnife, thanks for the pics and recommendation. I've been seriously thinking about getting one of the Rangers to replace my CS SRK as my beater/abuser, and I think you've convinced me to go ahead.

Robert, awesome sheath you came up with! I've been a fan for a while now. (One question though, how do you get the sheath liner screw out, that thing won't budge!)
XMP, I've owned SRK's before too and while it's a great knife, I just never liked the rubber handles. Micarta is my favorite, and this one comes almost perfect, and it's so easy to sand it down a bit.

I have got to say I really do like the look of the new rangers....I wasn't sure at first because I was very fond of the old version but the new one has really grown on me and I now prefer it !
I don't know if I would have removed the coating though, at least not until it got all scratched up !! However it would be a dull world if we all liked the same.....nice knife, don't forget to post some pics of it in action !!!:D

Nice rig. The Spec Ops Survival Sheath is a great improvement over the stock sheath. I carry my 5.5" Ranger in one with a LM Wave in the pouch. Makes a good do all combo.

Good work!

You have to use two flat tips, balance the thing, and turn it inopposite directions, being careful not to slip and stab yourself in the hand with a screwdriver. I don't know why they used that system. Most of the folks don't pull it out, so perhaps that's why.

I tried that but it wouldn't turn at all. No biggie though, it already fits great. Thanks!

I had to vice mine, CAREFULLY heat the screws with a lighter so not to melt anything and reef on the sucker for all I was worth with 2 flatheads to break the locktite.

No easy task but it can be done. DOnt strip the screws.

Skam

Tknife..... great improvements and great knife. I don't have a knife of that size but would like the RD (Ranger) brand. I'm just to damned attached to my axe;)

Thanks guys, finally got the screws apart and was able to make a better fit with the liner.
tarmix, I'm really impressed with the knife especially considering it was under $100. I don't have to feel too bad about abusing it, and I know it can handle it :D
